The battery is charging the capacitors that are located inside your charger. The same as when you connect the battery to the ESC.

Capacitors have the ability to 'store energy' and if they are already charged they will not spark.

When I was in HS we had fun charging capacitors and leaving them laying on the lab tables for and unsuspecting subject.
