Not much of an update. Got the Dzus fasteners glued on......

Pod guns are clear coated, and wing pod ends glued on. All finished.....

Started prep on the cockpit furniture.....

And will be trying to convert this guy into Stringfellow Hawke.....

Other than the cockpit/instrument panel, I think we are pretty close to the finish line. Waiting until the last minute to glue the glazing in place. Should be able to bolt the mechanics back in soon. It's almost a helicopter!

That's a little exaggerated!

I do appreciate the compliment though. Thank you very much!

Not much of an update this weekend.

Got the first coat of white on the tail blades. Sanded them as well. Ready for final coat and then red stripes....

Built a travel box for the vertical fin, tail boom and gun pods. Gun pods and vert fin go in first....

Then a foam cover layer....

Then the tail boom sets in place.....

Front is held in place by velcro cinch strap.....

Rear is held in place by being sandwiched between foam on the lid...

And lid in place held down with 4 wing nuts. Ready to be strapped down for traveling....

Then I masked the nose and sprayed some flat black (anti-glare).....

And a minor disaster!!! Pulled the masking tape from when I painted the flat black and it pulled some base paint right off.....

CRAP! This area was the hardest for me to paint when painted the fuse. This area was about 18" from the floor, pointing upward and and I was painting upside down, laying on the ground . Not sure if I didnt get the surface clean or if something else funky was going on when I was painting. Oh well, guess I get to figure out how to do base coat clear coat spot repairs now. Fortunately the damage is in a pretty inconspicuous location. I might even make it easy on myself and extend the flat black paint line down to cover this area up. That way I do not have to blend the grey color and clear coat.

Once I get the tail blades painted, I can start reinstalling the mechanics and installing the glazing.

Did you use blue 3m tape? I have had the same reaction before. I now use 3m striping tape that I got from the auto paint supply. it is very low tack. Maybe wet sand the clear and use a reduced paint in the air brush, light coats to build up the color. Then re-clear the area.

I didn't crash. I just ran out of airspeed, altitude, and ideas all at the same time!

Exactly what I used. The dark blue vinyl fine line 471+ tape.

Updates are less and less now and minor in substance. I guess that means we are getting close!

Got the tail blades painted. Will clear them tomorrow.....

Windows are installed. Front windows are held in place by screws so they can be easily removed. All other windows are glued in place with canopy glue.....

Fuel filler detail......

And I wanted to see what it looked like with the painted head on it before I closed up shop for the evening......

I like it!

Thanks Stan! Not too long before she gets in the air!

Finishing up little things here and there.

Installed the turbo nozzles. Epoxy putty on the inside.......

And from the outside......

Started prep for the instrument panel. Ready to start putting paint to it....

Stringfellow Hawke needs a helmet, so found this 3D printed beauty and painted her up to match the body color. Will fabricate a visor for it......

And added some tie downs on the transport platform. Velcro straps go through the landing gear. Keeps the heli solidly in position and nothing is touching the paint. The whole platform is tied down with ratchet straps to the floor of the trailer. She aint going anywhere during trips to the funfly's......

Gotta mod my M-blades (main blades) to fit the Vario blade grips and open up the blade bolt hole to fit a 6mm blade bolt. I dont anticipate any issues making those mods.

Till next time.........

Unbelievable!

Photobucket can kiss my white behind! They just changed from "free" to "pay to play".

Naive of me to think this would not have happened eventually. I'll find another hosting site for future updates. Not sure what I am going to do about the 2 years of photos that are now dead links.

Ugh!

Hi Steve. Happened to me, too. Once I had five forums downloading content from Photobucket and the bandwidth was way higher than the monthly limit. Now, I only use the forum's posting storage and have not looked at PB for three years now. I said the same thing, only with a few more explicatives thrown in for good measure. Take care.

OK, photobucket be damned LOL! That aint gonna stop me.

I searched the internet and found a 36 step by step process on how to build an instrument panel. I did in only 5 steps!! LOL!

Step 1. Start with a Vario cockpit set and an instrument panel from Joe at East Coast Vario.

Step 2. Add panel base color...

Step 3. Mask and paint the avionics frames.....
20170627_212608 by Steve Smith, on Flickr

Step 4. Use my super fine detail brush (pictured) and paint the buttons and switches and add some micro screws for detail.....

Step 5. Add instrument decals and assemble. Not my best work but l am pretty happy with the result. Good enough for Government work.......

And fabbed up some interior door panels.....
20170630_173935 by Steve Smith, on Flickr

Cockpit seats are being glued to their frames. Had to come up with a way for the seats to be removable since my radio system and turbine batteries sit under the floor under the seats. Wanted a mechanical system in lieu of magnets, and I think I came up with a decent solution. I'll document that tomorrow.

Stringfellow Hawke stopped by the shop today to check out the cockpit. He doesnt like pictures taken of him, so I had to sneak this pic. Uniform is the wrong color and missing the arm patches, but we will fix that soon enough.......
