First round finished. Just letting the clear cure out. The clear did not lay down as smoothly as I was hoping. Got a bit of orange peel. Oh well, it is not a museum piece. All in all, pretty happy with it. Paint line between the white and grey is about as good as I could ask for. Once the whole heli is finished, I'll get more detailed pics for ya'll......

On to the fuse!

Perhaps you know this perhaps you don't.
Spray your first colour then mask it off then spray a coat of the first colour again over the area of the second colour and let it flash off. This will seal the tape edge and the second colour won't creep under the tape edge.
If the clear is orange peely either up your air pressure a bit or use either a little more thinners or a slower hardener or thinners.

Ancillaries are done, hanging out to dry.....

And white base coat is on the fuse.....

It aint perfect, but I aint disappointed either.

This urethane base coat/clear coat system is not easy. I have much more respect for artists like satsuma and Mr. Wales who's end results are simply spectacular.

Finished shooting the clear on the fuse last night at about 8pm. It's been a long weekend painting. Painting is HARD!!!! Took WAAAYYY longer than I expected. Most likely due to two things; I am slow, and first time doing this so I was double, triple, quadruple checking myself and even second and triple guessing myself at times. Glad it is over and done with. Dont really ever want to do a base coat/clear coat paint job ever again LOL!! Think I am going to do single stage stuff from now on.

Well it is a beautiful sunny day today, so I decided to throw the heli together real quick like and take some pictures of it in the sun. Nothing is fastened down. No detailing or paint artifact corrections have been made. This is raw footage fresh from the "booth". So I give you a bunch of random shots......

Spectacular job Steve, Congratulations!

You wont be happy with single stage now you know how to 2k it, It just aint the same.

Anyway, now is the good bit, the fitting out and completing the model. Then you will have a model you can be proud of and people will be asking your advice about painting

Beautiful!!!

OK sandbagger!!!! We all know this wasn't really your first!!
It came out great.. you can be very proud of your "first" scale build!!
Peter is correct about not being happy with single based paints now that you have used 2k...
Great job and looking forward to seeing her up close at NATS/IRCHA , and Dalton!!!

Looking "excellent " Steve... and those small imperfections ( if you can see them) should be easily sanded/buffed out... one of the benefits of 2 part systems.... congrats

Thanks Tim, Peter, Stan and Jim!!!

Ya'll have given me so much valuable info these past two years, couldn't have completed this step!

Quick question, the dzus fasteners I have that go along the boom cover and doghouse service panels, I need to glue those little pieces on. CA the glue of choice for these little surface lovely's? Or maybe little dabs of hysol?

I would use CA or canopy glue the latter easier to clean up if some squeezes out? Hysol (in my opinion) would be a bit hard to work with in a small amount...

Canopy Glue

I agree with Jim.. hysol would be tough on these small items..
I would definetly go with canopy glue. It cleans up with water and dries clear...
CA, you stand the chance of some running...

This looks freeking awesome Steve, well done! Only one bad thing... we can't rib you about not painting it anymore... I agree with the others, canopy glue for the dzus fasteners. CA can "fog" the clear coat surrounding the part.

Good point about CA fogging the clear Barry. Thanks. Didnt think about that!

Getting the heli "fitted" out. Got some stainless wire mesh, painted it black, clear coated it, and started installing it in the vents. Used magnets to hold the pieces in place while the E6000 glue dries. Tape was used on the exterior side to protect the finish from the magnets.....

Added the nav light lenses, and rear strobe lens.....

"Smoked" the bubble and chin widows to give them a slight tint ('cause I like the look).....
BEFORE SMOKE......

AFTER SMOKE.....

Close up of the "frame" painted on the exterior side of the glazing....

Painted the rotor head.....

Rear defense pods installed....

And got the twiddly bits painted. They just need cleared with semi-gloss and then can be glued onto the fuse....

Retracts are re-installed and programmed. Getting closer to installing the mechanics back into her! Then I'll be too afraid to fly it!! LOL!!
