I have been back from CHF for a bit over a week now and last night I finally got to go over the docs after talking to Eric at the event. He made a few suggestions which I have put in place and it should help with the overall picture that I want the judges to see. There are some things that you really want them to notice and those are what you should have in the pictures. I am hoping to get out this weekend to test the helicopter since it took that hard self-induced autorotation controlled crash. As long as it spools up smoothly, I should be good to go for the next few get togethers and will be changing the main shaft as soon as I get a new one. Lights are ready to go. Take care.

another question.
Perhaps it has been answered and documented earlier, I was hoping to find out if the person who build it and entered the contest has to fly as well to win or someone else can fly it for him ?

Team Scale
Hi aashu,

Yes, in Team Scale, you can do the build and have someone else fly it for you.. All the same rules from 518 would apply, except for the builder of the model..

Get that new project ready...

In sport scale it does not matter.. the scoring is weighted towards the flight portion of the contest.

Buy it, built it or have it built.. just remember you have to declare that. The judges "like" to have you involved in the build.. and truth is you are going to score better in the static portion.. BUT.. most important is that you just get involved.

Alrighty then!!!!

Pack your helmets, cause I am going to enter Sport Scale with the Cobra!! Have flown it a handful of times and I am really liking the way it flies. So, now I gotta figure out these maneuvers, and start practicing a routine. Will probably be asking some questions on that.

My first question,....as I will be traveling alone, will someone be able to call for my flights? I can offer a well deserved thank you for payment! :-) I got the show up, fly, have fun part all figured out and planned out, but will need assistance with all the "other" stuff.

See ya'll in 3 months!

Cobra
Steve, is the Cobra your talking about the one that you show in your gallery and if so, do you have doc's for it? If so I think you should compete in the 518 class instead of the sport scale.

Mark, yes the Cobra is the one in my gallery, that I built over the winter. First, it is WAY off from being a 518 machine. And second, 518 is for the true modelers/builders of the scale community. I am no where near that kind of skill level and cant hold a candle to their ability. I am just having a whole lot of fun doing what I am doing!

I knew we had a cold winter in the Great Lakes area when I drove through Salamanca, NY on my way to Virginia and there was still snow on the slopes, lol. Hope all of you will be coming to the Nats/IRCHA as it should be a hoot. I am getting ready to tear the TOW Defender apart to flip the head turning direction and to paint up a the new set of symmetrical blades. I will most likely strip the current blades down and sell them as no other helicopter of mine could use them. We will see. Take care.

Question #2.

Need to build my sport scale flight routine, but am confused on if we choose a specific number of freestyle maneuvers or build a routine simply based on time.

I understand that there are the 3 Compulsory maneuvers as listed in Section 9 of the 518 rules (Hover with clearing turns, 45 degree climb out, and transnational landing.), and we also choose some"freestyle" maneuvers.

The 518 rules dont state anything about the number of freestyle maneuvers, they only talk about time limits. 518 states that there is a minimum of 2 minutes and maximum of 4 minutes for the freestyle portion of the flight, with a maximum of 6 minutes for the entire flight routine (compulsory plus freestyle flight time).

Do we simply build a routine that falls in the 6 minute time limit or do we choose a specific number of freestyle maneuvers?

Thanks.

We usually choose 5 manuevers.. there is a possible 50 points, so 5 works well.. or choose 10 and get 5 points each...(just an example!!)
There is a file that includes info on take off's, flying manuevers, and landings, and details on what each should look like.. Darrell is traveling, but can send you a pdf if you like..
If you hit the helitronix website, you should be able to find them...
Hope this helps you out..

Thanks Stan!

I found this thread from Darrell for the 2014 Nats. Hopefully this is the same file your were referring to. I have chosen 5 maneuvers from this list to go along with the 3 compulsory maneuvers.
After much work the suggested flight maneuvers are ready.
http://www.helitronix.com/maneuvers/info.zip
They are suggested!! If you want to do something that is not on the list you will find a blank form fill it out 3 times one for each judge. Now the judges know what you are doing.
Please go to the AMA web site and enter for two reasons the # of entries = # of places awarded for AMA 518 and there is a $50.00 late fee. Next is so I can plan for the pilots meeting/Low country boil on sunday night at 7.
There is no late fee for Team Scale or Sport Scale because they are not AMA event but we will be flying at the same time.
Let the fun begin.
