Is there any difference between a flybar guage vs a flybarless one? I thought they bot are to just determine angle of blade thats all?

You are correct - Pitch is Pitch on both heads

You need the main shaft vertical and the swash horizontal on both machines, but for pitch accuracy on the FB head, the Flybar needs to be horizontal too.

The Fly-bar ones are typically a visual check - meaning you sight a reference edge on the gage to the fly-bar rod, and the blade angle corresponds with a scale on the gage.

Fly-Bar-Less ones are typically battery operated, and just need to have something level to set the 'ZERO' angle. Then they display the angle difference relative to the 'ZERO'.

Go for one that doesn't reference the flybar, so a digital gauge or one with a hanging pendulum and a scale.

Something like above would get you close enough pitch wise.. Make sure whatever you get though opens wide enough to fit on your blades.

nope. in fact, i use my old FBL gauge, with it permanently set to 0°, then I mounted a digital gauge to it.

to use it, zero the digital gauge using the 'folded blade tip-to-tip trick', and go from there. works great.

if it ain't broke, break it.
