It has been a little while, but I remember the case # was not the difference in the carbs. The only way to tell was to carefully look at the slot in the spraybar. The older version had a smooth "eye" shaped openning, and the newer version looked the same but with a notch in that openning.
For what it is worth, I had all kinds of problems with that motor. I eventually obtained a new version carb and the transition was horrible. It got way too rich at about a third stick. A better solution, for me was the airbleed mod to the original carb version and Cool Power 15%.
I'm even pretty sure I have a spare original carb that is new or basically new, if that can help.
