Has anyone tried Awlgrip or similar products to paint canopies??

Awgrip is a two part polyurethane paint used for boats. I was wondering if it does any better as far as adhesion goes.

I have tried a fine abrasive blast, etc etc as a prep, but the fact of the matter is that PE is actually used in some applications for its "non-stick" inert properties. I read somewhere that pre-oxidizing the PE can help (in ozone-not very practical). I was thinking about trying something like hydrogen peroxide or even Polyester Resin catalysts.

What are some of your thoughts???

Light travels faster than sound, thats why some people appear so bright UNTIL you hear them speak.

Krylon "Fusion" on PE

I used a light base coat of Krylon Fusion spray paint for plastics. It acts like a primer that bonds to PE and stays relatively flexible, then 1-2 finish coats of whatever color you want. The color selection in the Krylon Fusion line is limited but one can use the lighter colors as a primer for lighter color finishes and mid to darker colors for darker finishes. Be advised, Krylon Fusion apparently only comes in gloss and won't "fill" like standard primer. Just use it as a base coat and you'll be fine.

They have Krylon Fusion in white which makes for a good base coat and keeps any of the colors you put on top of it bright and crisp. Be sure to let the krylon cure for about a week before applying any paint over top of it.

Darkforce:

Interesting about the drying time for the Krylon Fusion. I only let it dry down the recommended time on the can, then layed 2 light finish coats over it. The next morning, I went out and flew! Neither the Fusion base coat nor the finish coat seemed to suffer from not letting the Fusion coat dry for a week.

Ive painted 5 canopies so far with good results- no flaking or adhesion problems. Heres my technique. Lightly wet sand the piece with 400 grit. After its good and dry, (i use a hair drier) I spray on "800-13" adhesion promoter. Its made by Morton paint co, and is available at a local auto parts store. I then use a product called "Flexable bumper primer" It too, is available from auto parts stores. After that, I just airbrush on lacquer based colors. It seems like a lot of work, but the paint stays put. Im paranoid about flaking paint being ingested by the motor

rcnuts you are doing it the right way. there are other products that work the same, ppg has plastic adhesion promoter sxa 1050 in a spray can or buy it by the quart. the other one is bull dog. the ppg rep. did a demo in my shop on a ballon, he sprayed the promoter on the ballon and then painted it with base coat and clear coat, and then wrinckled it and hit and even twisted it and no paint flaked off. when he twisted it a little cracked but still most held. my raptor had a crash in some bushes and nothing flacked.
