well im slowly filling my brain with heli-info and this leads me to my next question,

i understand that you do an auto when you run out of fuel, or when your radio dies etc.. But what exactly is an auto, what does it do, and what does it look like?

an auto rotation is when a situation happens where you can't give power to the main rotor to keep the blades spinning.
also you can set your throttle hold to bring the engine to an idle to do an auto.
basically all it does is put the blades in negitive pitch to keep the blades spinning and when you get close to the ground you pull pitch to land.
or you can do it inverted just the oppisite.
i suggest practicing on the sim first

If your radio dies there is no auto. an auto is nessary when you have a flame out( motor dies) or you run out of fuel(never hapend to me). it is also alot of fun just to practice them intentionaly.
An auto is a begun at altitude and you apply megative pitch to your blades to increse the decent rate and rotor speed of the helicopter, as you aproch the ground you start to add rear cyclic to "flare" the helicopter slowing forward speed and adding positive pitch to slow your decent. if all goes well you land softly on the ground, if it dosent you land hard on your credit card.

Simple

Good explanations so far, I'll add to it.

You loose power to the rotor (intentional or not)
reduce the pitch of the blades to zero or lower
the weight of the heli falling through the air causes the rotor RPM either to remain the same or increase (depends on how much negative pitch is used)
the flare slows forward airspeed and will momentarily slow the decent rate,
Increase positive pitch to stop the helicopters decent and if all went well you didn't have to explain it to the wife.

In the Full Scale...real life.

AutoRotations are practiced in case your heli has some sort of engine failure. All helis are set up to have the Main Mast continue to spin Freely and turn the blades... The Stored energy in the turning blades that was present when the engine failed is your starting point.. Hence you dont drop like a rock when the engine fails. In Airplanes when you have an engine failure... you still have the forward airspeed and lift of the plane that will glide you to safety. With helis... no wings, no lift... wait... the rotating "rotors" act as wings to create "lift" Theoretically when your enging quits in a heli a 45 degree angle towards the ground and negative pitch will bring you to flared, collective (see previous posts) landing.
Applying negative pitch keeps the wind going through the blades and the "stored energy" stored and the rotor spinning. However too much negative pitch is inefective and will just drive you to the ground. When you get to the bottom.. you will use that stored energy to Flare/Add positive pitch to safely set you onto the ground...

My turn

You guys are correct. Ima explain it my way now.

Think of this. Whatever goes up must come down right! When your performing an autorotation the heli comes down because of gravity right! We use gravity in the auto so we can go to negative pitch without stopping the blades and we HAVE TO keep the Headspeed up until the heli lands right! So heres how its performed.

Heli is up high in the air(hopefully). It starts comeing down. You need to get a little bit of forward speed going so you can keep the head tilted up a tiny bit at the front. You go to negative pitch so air can go thru the rotors to keep the blades turning and turning fast at that. When you get near the ground you flare to stop the forward speed(unless you want to do a sliding auto) and feed in positive pitch to create lift and use what headspeed is left to land safely! If all goes well either you stay alive(you were in a real heli) or you dont have to take out a loan to buy another heli!
