posted this subject previously on general discussions but it seems as if it might be more of a sceadu thing.

I have a 601 and a 502 and the issue I'm talking about applies to both of these gyro's and others. In order to maintain a steady hover in non heading hold mode the mechanical adjustment needs to be biased so thet there is always a contstant pitch in one direction. This means that once you set the ATL's on the gyro one is always going to be larger than the other to compensate so left would be 130% while right would be 80%.

Is this right or am I missing something ?

I know that if I was to take off the servo arm from the servo and rotate it it would even out the Left and right differences, but this would also move the centre point at which the heli stays straight.
I fly with uneven ATL's and don't have a problem but I was just wondering if there is a better way. ?

It would seem that some heli's have 5º or so of tail pitch built in so that when the bellcrank is at 90º the tail has pitch, however the sceadu doesn't, and the tail pitch slider is off centre when there is this 5º or so of pitch.
Any Ideas ?

It does sound like you are missing something. A constant tail rotor offset won't be enough to make it fly right. You might get it at just the correct tail pitch setting for hover but everywhere else will be incorrect. You will have to add revo mixing so that you don't yaw when you are climbing and ascending. Also, you won't have the correct tail pitch if your headspeed changes.

Out of curiosity, why aren't you using heading hold mode. It just seems like a normal thing on such high end gyros.

I would guess that with heading hold gyros mechanical setup has changed since feed back you are getting through the gyro is so different. It was kind of a shock to find out the the servo travel didn't have anything to do with how far the servo moves when flying in heading hold gyro.

I have flown with mechanical gyros, piezo, heading hold, and even one short flight without a gyro. I would have to say that the heading lock gyro has been my favorite.
Personally, I like to set the gyro in heading hold. Get everything symetric and then adjust the yaw rates on both sides until I get an even rate in both directions. Then I go fly. With a 601, you will be hard pressed to get the tail to break loose. I have seen someone put there blades on backwards and 3D the fool out of the helicopter. No problems with the tail. Just a lot of abuse from the guys when they noticed. It wasn't my helicopter.

I do fly idle up 1 and 2 in Heading hold mode and like you said everything works perfectly well, it's just I was always shown to set up the heli in normal mode and tweek out any drifting that the tail might have - the 601 manual also suggests this.
The problem is that if you image the tail output shaft as a scale of 1-100 and the slider on it - at 50 there is no pitch on the tail blades - at 60 there is the correct amount of tail pitch to keep the tail from drifting in a normal mode hover - however in order to get full throw on the slider you would now have to offset the ATL's as there is 40 units on one side and 60 on the other.
Perhaps I should just forget it and put it permanently in HH mode - it's much easier !

I would just leave in in HH all the time. Thats just me. It works fine in HH mode. I seen no advantage in non HH. For me there are bigger problems that I can spend my time on.
