Hey everyone.

My wife and I are starting up a production studio business, and I felt a good start for us would be a heli training video. I just wanted to feel the idea out and see if there would be a market for such a product.

I'm already running ideas around in my head for a script, and thought it would be nice to have a heli training video that took a beginner from building the heli, to setting it up, and finally only to hovering and basic circuits. A good follow up video could be more advanced manuvers and basic aerobatics. A full out 3D video could complete the trilogy.

If we were to produce these, would they be of interest to you heli beginners out there? I would probably distribute via DVD or VHS, with a base price of between $16 - $25 depending on investment.

Thoughts?

Hey everyone!

Thanks for the interest. We've primarily been doing commercial and wedding video work, but this would be our first solo project. Since I'm deeply involved in all areas of R/C, I just thought it would be a great place for us to break out and do something cool that could help the R/C community grow. I was unsure about investing the time and money into this project without getting some feedback first.

I just received an email from Mark Ryder concerning this post. Apparently by posting this question I've broken the rules and have been classified as a vendor. That was not my intention, as I was simply wanting to see if a market for such a product existed. If we produce this video I will be buying advertising on the RunRyder site since it is such a targeted audience. I suppose I should have read the rules more closely.

I apologize for the illegal post. Mark, you have my blessing to remove it if you wish.

Thanks,

Brian Sumpter

I would probably do the instruction for the basic video that doesn't go beyond basic circuits. For the aerobatic and 3d videos I would have to have to find someone more qualified than me to host the video and provide the correct training procedures.

Perhaps you missed the part where I mentioned getting someone more qualified than me to teach?

bsumpter,

Don't let people shoot your idea down. I and others have talked about this topic before (see link below), and would like to see some basic videos.

Send us some samples of your movies if you can.

Thanks,

I think it would be a great product if done right.
When I first started almost a year ago all I had was a crappy R30 V1 manual and Rays Heli manual. A DVD would have been nice.

Beginners video tape

There is a video tape called StrictlyBeginning, which was
professionaly produced by StrictlyHelicopters. Its a 120
minute video designed to help the beginning model heli
pilot with assembly and setup. At 24.95, its a great
stocking stuffer for the newbie helicopter pilot. The tape
is available through Helicopter World and Starwood
Scale Models.

For More info check out:

Oh, I'm not giving up.

Although Panos' choice of words came across as a little rude, he does bring up a valid point. If I do this I will recruit the appropriate instructors and deliver a top-quality product. If I can't hit the A-list in video / editing quality as well as content quality, then there's no point in proceeding.

I know video, and know it well. I also am a very avid R/C junkie with close to 20 years invested, so combining the two would be the perfect project for me. A labor of love, if you will.

I knew there were a few other videos out there, but wasn't sure if any of them had a complete series that took you from opening the box your first day to your first 3d manuvers down the road. I think such a series would be invaluable to the beginner in helis, as I know the trouble I had finding information when I started. It would have been great to have it all in one place.

I'll keep everyone posted, and would like to thank Mark Ryder for allowing this thread to continue. Thanks for the input, everyone!

Oh, and Panos -- I'll send you the first copy free of charge so you can publicly review it here on RunRyder. How's that for fair?

Thanks,

Brian

Not saying it can't be done again....

But MILT video library puts out a beginner and advanced heli flight course series.

Also Ray's has a instructional video from beginning set up to basic flying. Both very good videos I thought, but a little dated. MILT'S was done in 1989 and a lot has been changed since then (gyro, helis, govenors). I think you should definately should touch a little on these things.....even CCPM if you have room for it.

Hope this helps and best of luck!

I'd be very interested in this as many of the videos I've seen are NTSC based, would it be possible to get a PAL one for the UK ?

Even though I have been in the hobby for a couple of years, I am still hovering and slowly moving into forward flight. I would welcome a video on hovering and then some methods of going into forward flight. But as always nothing beats burning fuel.
