After months of trying on the sim, the "light bulb" came on and I finally figured out the piro flip! I tried one on the real thing Sunday, and while it wasn't the prettiest looking, it WAS a piroflip!!!!! The wind was strong and we had horrible gray skies, not the best for trying something new, so I opted to return to the sim untill next weekend. Thanks to those of you on RR who post helpfull hints on how to do (any) stunts - I couldn't have figured it out without you!!

you start your piro-flips with for, aft, left, or right cyclic?

yeah!!!!!

way to go bro i grab me nutz and tried one to a month ago and i started about two mistakes high and could only get 2-3 flips before i was 50 ft off the ground. i stopped trying them until i get a better gryo ie:601 i don't think the 401 likes hard tail movements
i just started practicing more and more inverted flight tried the funnel and tried some inverted autos. whew curtis better look out almost got the blade stopping auto down pact!!!
i am going to keep practicing the inverted autos cause there so hair raising knowing just 2 seconds of a mess up and you could have one messed up heli.
good thing i own a r60
just keep practicing and youll get them down.
and remember our wifes don't care what we do with our helis.
i got the same reaction with my wife to.
for all i care i could put her in a piro flip and kick her out the door till she shows some more appreciation for aviation.

I give it a quick nudge forward to get the nose down a little (from a hover), a quick blip of positive collective to get it moving, then haul the elevator all the way back while giving it left rudder, and negative collective. Once I hit the stop on the elevator I start a clockwise stir with the cyclic, and alternate pos and neg collective. I can't really say where the collective comes in other than watching closely at the disk and giving it pos when upright and neg when inverted. It seems like I'm getting one revolution of cyclic stir to one complete collective cycle (1 pos, 1 neg). I also think a cyclic ring would help it look better as I am hitting the "corners" on my stir, but all in good time! The biggest thing that helped was a post by someone that suggested setting a dual rate for the rudder alone so that I could haul the rudder all the way over and maintain a slow piro rate. I set my rudder rate in idle up three to 50%.

James
HA! I hear you man! I'm ready to try the inverted auto as well, if the wind will ever get in the right direction for me. I know this sounds stupid, but I'm sure you and those who can do these know what I mean!

Thanks guys!!!
(hey, did I mention I did a piro flip this weekend?!)

i normally start them with for. cyclic as well... i can do them starting at any cyclic position, but i am most comfortable pushing the nose over.

try starting them with left cyclic (if you go right.... right cyclic if you are going left...) that is pretty easy too. if i'm in FFF i'll start them with left or right cyclic. it pops the ship up a bit.

i'm not sure if a ring would help me... i've learned everything with out one. i'm game to try one though

Lets see if I have this right...If I start with left cyclic, I still use left rudder and the collective management would still be the same. Do you find that starting with left/right cyclic gives you a better "pop" than for/aft cyclic? I've found that that first "pop" is pretty important in getting the motion going. I'll have to try that on the sim!
Thanks bro!

if i am in a hover or there abouts, then i will start with for. cyclic. if i am inverted i will start with aft. cyclic.

...........(right piro-flip) if i am in FFF i will start with left cyclic. that nearly just slams the ship to a stop, and pops it up a bit and over... given that you get your tail in correctly.
if i want the ship to -bounce- up (while in FFF) and go into piro-flips i will start them with right cyclic. the reason it will go so high is 'cause it is the begining of a piro-loop. looks neat when done from a metre off the ground then bounce! then sounds.. then heli looks like it's going to explode
when i do left piro-flips all of the above in true just opposite except for the for. and aft.

cheers

Try to do left hand piro flips....it gives the engine less to deal with since the tail is spinning the with the torque...to the right, it goes opposite of the torque so the engine uses more power....But in a auto, you want to spin the tail to the right...I can do them fine right hand rotation, but i have some problems with left hand...im getting it though. But since i fly 90's, it dont matter were the tail is going...i got the power to pull it

I think I'm doing them to the left (start tail in, slam left rudder). I tried it on the sim to the right as well, but it just seems easier to go to the left. I did notice on the sim the tail was a little wierd, if I loaded the blades too bad the tail would let go and start a violent piro. I've never had the tail let go on the Pmax even under some really stupid inputs that bogged the motor badly, so I adjusted it out as much as I could on the sim. (ya gotta love that power!!)

yep, left tail means you are doing a left piro-flip.

that p-max has a good tail, so it hold even when the head speed is very low. i really had to lug mine down a lot to get the tail to let go.

eh.... i'm attempting to make a recording
