I'm having a problem with my align 450 v2 se. It hovers fine, then intermittently will violently swing to the left, ie, counterclockwise, sometimes as much as 90 degrees. I have changed out the servo, gyro, receiver, tail rotor bearings, belt looks ok, belt tension is ok. The linkage moves smoothly without binding. Tail rotor blade grips are tight to the hub. I'm not sure where to go from here. Any thoughts will be much appreciated.

Check the front belt pulley. They have been known to come loose on their shaft.

Maybe getting belt electric static. Try silicone spray on the belt.

Thanks for the help. I'm planning on replacing the front pulley assembly in the near future. How would a build up of static electricity effect tail rotor function?

front pully is slipping on the shaft...make sure you replace it with a metal pully not the nylon pully

I removed the front pulley assembly. It has a metal pulley on top and a blue nylon gear on the bottom. I tried to turn them and both seemed very tight on the shaft with no play. Does this rule out a problem with the assembly or could it still be slipping and for some reason does not slip in my hands?

It can cause your gyro or receiver to glitch. I was never a believer in it but after hearing a few good convincing cases, I think its possible.

I don't like stuff on the belt but it would be worthwhile to try it.

Do you still fly a 72mhz radio? Does the motor cutout for a split second before the tail let's loose or does the tail just move?

I fly 2.4. No the motor stays at a constant rpm, the tail just moves. thanks for explaining the theory on belt static.

What gyro and tail servo are you using? What is the gain set at? In normal or heading hold mode?

I have built many 450 Trexes. Some had belt static and some did not ever get it. I mean with the same set up, very odd thing. Try rubbing a dryer sheet on the belt to reduce static, it worked for me.

Got to have my cup of heli in the morning.

In response to balsabasher questions, the loss of tail control occurs in heading hold and rate modes. I am using a futaba gy 401 gyro with delay set at 0 and limit at 100. My transmitter is a spectrum dx7se with rate set at 24 percent and heading hold at 90 percent. The servo is a align ds415m digital.

I am hoping to put the heli back together in the next few days with the belt treated with a dryer sheet and a new front pulley assembly and see what happens. I don't think there was anything wrong with the front pulley assembly but I'm changing it just to be sure.

Just a follow up-I went ahead and changed out the front pulley assembly, treated the belt with a dryer sheet and just to be sure, sprayed the belt with some silicon lubricant. Just took it for a test flight-no change, tail still randomly twitching. Does anyone have any other ideas?

When does this happen exactly? Does it happen when you work the collective or does it happen at random?

And

Do you have an extra tail servo to test with?

happens totally randomly. Have already tried two other servos, ie, three servos all together.

Maybe its the gyro?

Do you want to try another gyro? I may have one in spares box. If you do, pm me. You can use it for troubleshooting.

Do you have another gyro? I had the same problem with my se and a 401. I switched it to FBL using a 3gx and an Align FBL head and it is a new machine. I think a used 3gx and the head cost about $60. Or you could try a different gyro like the align gp780. You should be able to find a used one cheap.

I have already changed out the gyro-both were futaba 401. I probably have an Align gyro around somewhere.

The only thing left that drives the tail is the front gears, have you checked out the gears, auto rotation hub and bearing?

Just remember -- if the world didn't suck, we would fall off.

The 401 will handle a surprising amount if setup correct, soooo...check all your tail gears for any broken/stripped teeth(ALL!) and the one way, it may be slipping and gripping, causing the kick.

The heli is belt drive. The teeth on the main gear assembly including autorotation hub and the front tail gear assembly are ok. (front tail assembly is brand new) The teeth on the tail gear shaft are metal and ok. I'm not sure how to check the one way for intermittent slipping other than changing it out. If the one way was slipping, would that cause variation in rotation of the main rotor? The main rotor rotation speed seems constant when this happens. Belt teeth are all present and in good shape.

if it doesn't fit, make it fit.
