Well that's not good.....

I have a couple of concerns with these mechanics. Nothing distressing but made me question the setup.
First of all I noticed if the pulley is not centered well or the belt tension is not just right the belt hits the side frames. The hole on the frames could have been a bit bigger.
Last thing I thought of was the pulley falling apart like that.
I think there are too many bellcranks and it kind of reminds me of the old Kavan for some reason.
I am not an expert by any means so these are strictly my observations and opinion so turn those flamethrowers off please LOL

yup. its not good, also,,once something is up..we need to disassemble everything.. everytime... would have been fine IF THE MECHS wher problem free..but they are PROBLEMATIC.AT BEST.. little stuff..that would cause a bad crash,,,,

Emile has one of the 1/6 scale 429s. I haven't had a chance to check it out but I like that you can install your own mechs in it.

Emile,
do you think coverting the Roban mechs to a clutch system will emilinate some of the stresses being transmitted in these mechs?

We know someone who has done that conversion, maybe we can talk him out of the procedure he followed to convert his...

I'm not sure Roy, I would have to see what the conversion looks like.

Prior to mine getting destroyed in a fire which wiped out my collection, I had the Bell429 in heli med version.

The Geometry was awful 2:1 ratio from servo to swash, which meant the FBL unit was right down on its minimums.. got it up to 45%.

Also there was a lot of run out on the main gear, the UK distributor Quick UK was brilliant, they sent out an upgrade and new shaft after they found the fault.

Also the tail drive gear meshing was poor, it could have worked right away but the gears wold have worn very quickly. Spoke to another Roban owner of another scale model (Coastguard) he spent all day re meshing the gears.

The fuse quality was brilliant, could not fault it, good value for money.I improved the sent cockpit and added lots of little switches and features, but sadly the next day it all perished in my fire..

So I never got to fly it or even hover it.

OK, here are pics of my mechs showing the belt markings as well as showing where the belt rubs and causes wear and friction.

Hi Matt,
that is freaking sad to see you lose your beloved models.

As for the Bell 429, I am in total agreement with you on the bellcranks and setup of the mechanics.

As for the scale details, I am redoing my interior into a Medical helo interior and adding a lot of scale details, especially to the exterior so that the looks match the price my wife Angie paid for it

From one scale heli lover to another, if I can help you in any way to recover and get back into the hobby, please do not hesitate to let me know.

looks like the pulley was installed upside down, I am not sure if that could cause some loading of the belt and contributed to the pulley failure?

Special thanx to roy..for the pix..gates powergrip gt 408-3GT belt

helikid >the pulley is not upside down in fact it will only go in on one side ,,the hole is 6mm in one side and 5mm on bottom had to cut the motor shaft....(the manual is wrong)

sorry Spy,
not sure I understand what you mean about having to cut the motor shaft due to different size holes and the manual being wrong.

Just want to be sure I did not screw up my mechs when I installed the motor, pulley, etc...

I think I need to check the tension on mine after the test flights as the belt did not appear to be rubbing then and now there are rub marks it seems.
still want to open up those side holes though

> if are using a motor with a long 6mm shaft, the pulley will only go in on the set screw side,,,the other side has a smaller hole ..(at least on this pulley)..
> had to cut the shaft to get belt/ pulley alignment,,

Hi Roy, fixing your belt issue is as easy as using a dremel to clearance the side frames where the belt passes through. These belts do stretch a little and that's normal. They tend to flap on the return side (less tension) of the pulley.

The pulley isn't 5mm on one side it just was not board correctly. Your pulley was installed upside down. In the photo it looks like you ground out some spots on the pulley ? What were those for?

>>I did not grind anything on that pulley...and it is 5mm on one side..about 2-3 mm deep.and its not UPSIDE DOWN..it perfectly aligned from wher I stand..40+ flights....who knew the flange would come off.>THE top Flange is also pressed in like the bottom<... Not all motors have a shaft that long.to accommodate the set screws on the bottom plus having the set screws on the bottom only INCREASE the Side loads on the bearings,,not to mention the pulley hole NOT being true..
