Hi,
Blade 350QX with about 50 minutes total flight time, using Spektrum DX6i. Original 2200 LiPo fully charged and balanced. New batteries in Spektrum. No camera. Just an unpowered EBay gimbal attached.
Wide open field of 5 acres. Took blade up, down, all directions and turns with the rudder control. About 5 min. into flight, the 350QX started climbing over 200ft, banked slowly to left and regardless of my commands, just kept going away. I flipped the "Return Home" switch. NOTHING! Turned off the DX6i. Nothing.

Alas…fading out of sight over woodlands.

My SAD day

Any others with similar experience?

THX for your response.

1. I had my address, but no Ph # on the copter.

2. I've had no "Binding" instructions, and don't know what that is all about. Sorry.

3. Every flight, I end with a "Return Home" flip of the switch. It has landed ever time within 5 ft.

The latest:

I contacted the tech dept at Horizon. Explained my predicament and how I had done everythig by the book. Also, I said that same morning, I contacted Hoeizon and purchased their latest (Blade 350 QX2 for $448) The tech guy I was talking with said "Rik, give me a monument" and went off line. A few miutes he came back on and said "Rik, seems you did everything right. How about we give you a refund of %50, making your cost $224 ???"

WOW… I agreed to that and waited for my new Blade 350 QX2 to arrive.
Several days later, it arrived and I went to the hobby shop where I purchased the original and asked them to "Bind" this copter. Took a few minutes and I was off to head home.

OK… here is the "kicker" folks…

I pulled into the parking area of our private senior community where there are two 2-acre grassy fields where I have flown my previous copter before.

Put in the battery and started the new 350 QX2. Got it up about 30 ft. and decided to just cruise around overhead in a circle. The end on the second circle, the copter decided to straighten out and head North, without me giving it any other commands.

SH-T. I thought… I tried to give a sharp left aileron and before I knew, my copter had landed in the topmost of a large birch tree about 80 ft away. Fortunately, I didn't give a command to head higher to avoid trees, 'cause if I did, the copter would have been a "Gonner".

Long story a little shorter, I got it down and the next day, I took it to the hobby shop. The manager got out a Blade Micro copter, put it on the floor of the shop, took my controller I brought. The copter started, rising up waist high and stayed there. The manager brought it down and turned it off. Said, "Rik, looks like the controller is OK."

In my mind, Since two copters had a "flyaway" problem, the problem MUST be with the controller! However, since the shop manager knew more about RCs than I, I asked him to take both my copter and controller for a few days to test ore thoroughly.

Right now, I'm hoping for some good news soon!

You are flying a Blade product, with DX6i, and you did not bind them together?

Did a hobby shop or someone "linked" the two together?

By no means I am blaming you for what happened, rather I am trying to figure out WHO binded or link the transmitter with the Blade 350.

If this is a factory as is combo, the guys at Blade would really like to know about what happened to you.

IF someone did it for you when you bought it, they likely missed something.

Any Fly-away-model, whether a Quad or Heli, is a potential disaster, It could hurst someone or cause an accident when it comes down.

Both Blade models were "Bound" separately, several weeks apart. Not "bound together! by a reputable hobby shop that sells tons of RC stuff, including Blades/controllers, etc.

Hopefully, I will find out in the next day or so, what the problem is. Then I'll make a decision as to contacting Horizon Hobby.

Try another memory
Make a long story short, I had three crashes on two different helicopters on a brand new jr 10x. Everyone said it couldn't be the controller including Horizon. After the third crash, I sent the transmitter in and they found memory number one was defective and they repaired the radio and told me it was as good as new. (It was NEW, and they did not offer me any financial help and was out about 2k). I am still using it today with no further problems. I would send the transmitter in.

When I asked if your original 350 was bound together I was refering to YOUR transmitter, not with another quad.
anyway, good luck with your issue.

2 Flyaways - SOB!
8/26/14

UPDATE

Both quads were bound by the same person at the hobby shop. I watched every step he took, but since he is experienced in using the DX6i on the Blades and controller and works the system much faster than I. I chose to let him do it. I double-checked both times.

After the second flyaway, I took my Blade 350 QX2 and the controller back to the hobby shop. They gave it a quick exam, but no fly test. The shop owner said he's prefer Horizon Hobby in Chicago to the thorough check. Sooo that's where it was sent this week.

I'm sure it will take several weeks for me to know the status.

If you goggle quad fly aways, you will see this is well reported event with many different types of quads.

After watching several people with quads, i am beginning to think many of these are user error.

People are not taking the time to read the manual and to understand how the controls works. While most of these units have some sort of return to home feature, most people fail to understand how they work, but yet rely on them. Every time you take that quad out to the field you need to let the GPS Initialize and figure out where it is. Many people forget to do this and then the unit trys to fly to the last spot where it was initialized.

You have stated you dont have the instructions and do not even know how to bind your quad to your transmitter. That is the very first step you have to do and the fact you dont know how to do that is scary at best. You need to find/download the manual and read it. What you dont understand you need to ask about.

As you have found out these are complex devices and you cant just throw them up in the air and expect everything to work out.

I would agree with Rudy's point. If you are unsure about the inner workings of your unit, then it's always best to find someone who does know. Although it seems that you did find some help, you didn't do as much to make an effort to learn and understand what he was doing and why he was doing it.

Your DX6i seems to be the common donimintor to this problem (other than you of course.) Even though I did not like the DX6, I've owned and programmed several DX6i's and one of the things that sticks out about this particular system is that is NOT considered a full range system. If I remember correctly, Spektrum states that as a warning and designates the system for park flying only. So, if you in fact are attempting to fly this model on that system at extended distances, then that may be why you keep losing your models to flyaways. Correct me if I'm wrong as I no longer use the DX6 I still have for that very reason and the system's capabilities may have been upgraded.
