Technology is making this possible. It's only a matter of time before technology limits what is possible. I'm betting we'll soon see the manufacturers voluntarily limit the altitude to 400' using on-board altimeter/GPS for their products. Yes, there are DIY systems and potentially ways to defeat it, but there are DIY products, but it would limit the fast majority to 400'.

Wow, both videos by the same dude in the news article. That is the stuff that makes regulations necessary unfortunately. The AMA created guidelines to help keep the hobby safe and out of the government regulatory spotlight, but since many seem to think they don't need to follow AMA guidelines and fly wherever they want now, what else is there to do but get the government involved. We don't (hopefully) fly our helis and planks in these locations and environments, so why are multirotors and FPV any different?

We don't (hopefully) fly our helis and planks in these locations and environments, so why are multirotors and FPV any different?
Because a very large percentage of Multirotor operators have little or no training, no 'history' in the hobby. No 'investment' in the 'idea' of Rc Modeling and are generally dilettantes who think that their new 'toy" is just oh so 'awesome'. In other words, a vast majority of Multirotor users are just plain A$$holes. Rules don't apply the the bozo who goes to B&H and buys a Phantom so he can do "aerial photography". I have built multis for motion picture companies (and Helis as well), have worked on government contracts for UAV's, have developed systems for long range operation and enjoy flying my multis whenever I have a chance. But the number of imbeciles that I see buying Phantoms is staggering.

Wedding photographers who fly them over the wedding party (and in one instance right INTO the bride and groom), Real Estate brokers who think they have the right to photograph their properties and don't believe it's a commercial application (I personally think that they should be allowed to use them to showcase their properties, but that isn't the point). "Indi filmmakers who think that now they can get that perfect aerial shot right down here in the subway (no kidding). And the list goes on.

The press eats this like crack heads smoke rock. They LOVE a juicy DRONE GOES MAD story and of course build it up as much as possible.

Enjoy it while you can because I can forsee a time very soon when we are going to be HEAVILY regulated if not outright banned. Banning them will be impossible,m but trust me, they (FAA and Government Entities) can levy heavy fines if they want to control this activity "off the flying field".

Oh, BS. Most of us didn't "sow" anything. I hate sayings like this, such as "we get the government we deserve". I didn't vote for any of that crap, either, and I sure as HELL don't "deserve" any of that utter garbage.

Exactly. Sad part is there are a number of experienced people in the RC hobby that know better, but choose to take it to the next step also.

I shop at B&H Photo also, and I was a bit surprised when I saw all the DJI stuff they sell. Definitely no longer a hobby shop item.

DJI have no business selling their Phantom at the retail level. That singular model can be traced back to a large number of these incidents. No one is complaining about the AR Parrot drone are they?

I've bought the last DJI equipment that I'll ever buy. Once my F550 meets its demise it will get replaced with something high end from Esprit.

So, remind me again - in what way is a manufacturer responsible for irresponsible use of their products? I'm not quite getting ya'lls idea here about pushing personal responsibility onto someone else? How does that work again? Your F550 ruined your FPV skills I take it?

I think I'm starting to see how all this works now. Manufacturers are the ones at fault for irresponsible pilot behavior, looks like. And each of us seems to be responsible for the irresponsibility of these other pilots.... That's a new twist I wasn't aware of in all this. Very interesting....

Yep. Cars are the reason for drunk driving, spoons make people fat, and guns kill people.

If someone breaks an FAR, then go after THEM! Restricting those that fly responsibly is not the answer.

Yeah, you know.... that's exactly what I was taught too - we are responsible for our own actions. Tsk, imagine that - how could I have been so horribly misled?

Seems that it's actually all DJI's fault. TMoore's F550 seems to talk to him and tell him to do irresponsible things, so he's switching to the more silent Parrot! That must be why he's having all this trouble flying FPV (well, that's all actually my fault!).... Same with this guy in the video - the Phantom apparently told him to do that altitude test...

Amazing!.....Who woulda thunk it!? Let me see if I can wrap my head around this one here...

You're the poster child for irresponsible use of technology; if it wasn't for FPV you couldn't even fly LOS by your own admission and we wouldn't be having this nice conversation because all your stuff would be in the dust bin at this point. No FPV, no unclejane. Full scale skill don't necessarily translate to the model world, so who's the crutch here? My FPV skills are intact, fact is I don't fly my F550 on FPV, strictly LOS and usually it is with all the automation turned off.

Read it again Chris, I said at the "retail" level. I didn't say they couldn't sell them at all but it needs to stay at the Hobby Shop level so that the folks that buy this stuff might have a chance at some education prior to initial use so some of these high altitude tests might not happen at all. Did I mention anything about restrictions? When I buy weapons at the retail level the weapons are registered, when I buy cars, the cars are titled. Only spoons are unregulated, for now. Remember when Sears, JC Penny and others used to sell RTF stuff and folks would just come out to the fields and turn on? Now it is even more irresponsible because the stuff almost flies itself. Speaking for me only, I get to vote with my dollars and DJI gets no more of them. In this case the manufacturers need to bear some responsibility as to how their products are distributed to the masses.

Apparently you can't read or your imagination has just run amuck and you're now trying to become a fiction writer of some sort. Yeah you are responsible for your own actions UJ, step out from under the hood and learn LOS, heck there may be some young dude out there in NM that would help a fellow like you learn to how to fly his models without the crutch of FPV.
