Hi, while Im new to flybarless and this model in particular I have been in and out of RC Helicopters since 1984 (I started with a Cricket and used to fly with Robert Gorham of GMP). I picked this up on Ebay and I was wondering what battery and charger do you guys recommend on a budget and what source has the best prices? Also I am looking for a transmitter and receiver, I am looking at the Spektrum is that a good choice? Also what model of Spektrum Transmitter/receiver and should I use a satellite?

Thanks in advance, Bill

I think you made a great choice for your return to the hobby Bill!

It is a 6S machine, so a good charger will be a must, unless you have a lot of time to wait around for packs to charge. I went through a few, under-powered, inexpensive units, before settling on an iCharger 306b. They can be had reasonably in the for sale section from time to time. It will require a power supply and will handle up to 1000W. I currently use an old computer server power supply set up for use with my chargers. Units just like it can be had for $50-$100 shipped,in the for sale forums. Get a charger and power supply that's up to the task!

I use a variety of batteries, including- Pulse, Revolectrix, Turnigy, and Glacier. In my opinion, the Glacier packs are the best deal on the market today. Turnigy is cheaper, but in my experience, just won't hold up as long. That being said, I usually have a set in use- because they are cheap. Pulse is great but more expensive, and the Revoletrix, so far, has performed as good as the Pulse for less $$.

For transmitter and receiver, I personally think that the Spektrum line is a great way to go. They are everywhere, reasonably priced, and perform great! The AR7200BX is a great unit- very simple to set up and flies great. Transmitters from Spektrum are very nice. The DX6 can be had quite cheap on the used market, but I would highly recommend spending a little extra on the DX8. It is a much nicer unit with some very nice features for helis.

These are my opinions, based on my experince, having entered this hobby ~ 3yrs ago, and making plenty of uneducated purchases before getting to where I am now.

Have fun!!

Thanks Ricka1, great info! I am looking forward to getting in the air again! I am a little worried about going flybarless, in the old days that meant the thing would be a real handful!

I have read much good about the newer flybarless stuff though. But the new 3 axis gyros are what I have to learn much about, that and satellite receivers. The big change the last time I got back into rc copters was ccpm but that was pretty straight forward, hopefully this will be too.

I can understand your apprehension. I felt the same way when I did my first FBL conversion on a 450 heli, with a Tarot ZYX controller. Believe me, I had NO idea what I was doing and managed to get the thing to fly OK. The Spektrum AR7200BX is a much better FBL unit and it is even easier to set up, as are most of the good quality units on the market now. I remember the first time I flew with a AR7200BX- I almost giggled out loud at how stable it was. Another thing you have going for you is the great support of this and other forums on the internet. There is a lot of help here whenever you need it.

This is my first flybarless machine and can say it is really more responsive!! Its good for quick flips and rolls but can also get you in trouble faster....I would start out by turning down a bit with plenty of expo.
Just my 2 cents.

That's the beauty of the new FBL controllers and computer transmitters- you can mellow it way out, or make the thing a real demon. You can start slow and gradually work up to the kind of style you want. The pre-installed flight modes in the AR7200BX can make this real easy for a beginner. The iKON unit, which I use now, has the same sort of feature, with the added advantage of a self leveling capability.

I used the Ace 5.2 that came with it and plugged two satellites directly into it for Spectrum use. The 5.2 is NOT set up for this heli as the add states. I would seek help from someone with experience on this gyro if you are using it. There are a couple excellent sites on here that run you through set up also.
Good luck

I forgot to mention that I never have used low rates or dialed back the cyclic or tail, I like a sensitive setup so I may be ok with the standard 5.2 settings.

I have decided on the Spektrum DX8 but Im not sure about the receiver, will the SPEKTRUM 6ch AR6200 DSM2 2.4GHZ RECIEVER w/ SATELLITE be ok. Will I need 2 satelites? The whole satellite thing is another new thing to me.

Hey wild bill,

Here is a video I did showing the remote Spektrum receiver setup on the GT5.2 (I do advise putting two of the satellites on).

Watch at YouTube

The basic settings the unit comes with usually work very well for this machine, but if you want a more aggressive tune for the GT5.2 I would be happy to share with you mine.

Let me know if this answers your questions or leaves you with more! LOL

Thanks,

Thank you Adam, great vid! I still have to order the transmitter, receiver, satellites and batteries, then I will be ready to get into the setup. I do have a question, with the 3 axis gyros is it possible to turn off heading hold?

That's a good question. I've never tried to put the GT5.2 into "rate" mode. Are you asking for it for trimming the machine? I have trimmed mine by doing a good swashplate leveling on it and then simply flying, it works amazingly well. I definitely would not fly without heading hold on, it can be very squirly.

I ask because I only flew with headin hold once on my Trex 450XL, and it was a new experience for me. On my 3rd flight I did a 540 stall turn and the heading hold just messed with my head! Im am an old timer and wasn't used to the tail locking like that so I turn HH off and never used it again. This time I will just have to get used to it maybe on a sim.

Wild Bill,

On 550 sized birds and above, I would suggest two sats, or on units like the AR7200BX with built in receiver, a single sat. I'm not familiar w/ the GT5, but if there are two satellite connections, I'd use them both. I use the iKON with two sats and have had no problems. I don't like to take any chances on losing communication with the heli.

Thanks Ricka, the transmitter came with one satellite and I just ordered a second, and the GT 5.2 does have 2 connects for satellites.

Ok I had enuff time to mess with it and plugged in both satellites and setup the GT 5,2, I had everything working and turned everything on and off a few times with all working fine but then it acted like I hadn't gone thru the channel set mode yet and I had to re-do every channel again and all worked well until I shut it off again then when I turned it back on it was like I never did the channel set mode again.

After a few times of doing the channel set mode and losing it when I shut off the radio, then I got a Ram fail screen when I turned it back on.

Does the GT 5.2 come pre programmed like it does when new when you buy a replacement?

Well I figured it out, I needed to work on it at a time when Im not exhausted from work and can take some time instead of being in a hurry and trying to squeeze in helicopter time. All seem to be good now, but it will be a while before first flight since work is so stressful right now!
