I haven't messed with it yet but is there any adjustment between the main gear and the tail rotor gear.

Not sure exavtly what you mean.

The holes in the side frame are set up so that you can move most of the bearing blocks around a bit for alignment.

You also will want to droop the boom a bit (again, using the slightly oversize holes in the side frame) so that the 1/16th piano wire tail drive will enter the idler shaft straight (otherwise you will break the wires).

It seems to me that we used to set up the idler shaft and main shaft first, to get the gear mesh and alignment, then install and adjust the motor mounts to get the belt tension (which should be run as loose as possible without slipping, then do the tail alignment.

Yes I have a little slop in the mesh of the main and tail drive gear.

Page 6 covers the install of that gear. We used to put a piece of paper between the gears and then push them into each other. That seemed to give about the right gap.
