On all of these threads that I read the thing that stops me in my tracks every time is calling our helis with the adjective as TOY.
I would like to get some one with an imagination to come up with a better analogy than toy. The word toy give me the image of some kid pushing some plastic four wheeled vehicle across a rug.
I know ..it's the cabin fever talking here....I thing I am going to go and fly today.

This is very common and I get it alot from people who dont understand the hobby. I'm always reluctant to tell a girl I go out with about my hobby as well. Some laugh because you play with 'toys' and some are more understanding of the complexity involved and knowledge required to do what we do. But honestly they are toys. Are they extremely dangerous, complex, expensive, and sophisticated? Yes they are but they are in my life for my relaxation and enjoyment. I guess the other side to this would be those who use them as a tool for a job. Ie- aerial video and photography. Just my opinion.

If they be Ignorant let them be Ignorant

Actually for some : It is the greatest meld of engineering science mind's I have ever known.

It encompasses ALL the disciplines, From Aero E, Material Science Applications, ME / Comp Sci and Telemetry /all Level's of Electronic' / Electricity, ECT. on and ECT. And Growing -----------------

You can easily fill a page out just the TOP Disciplines be for you branch out into set's or sub set's or Tree's of Discipline.

Just the GIFT of the Forum : Is in it self a relational link to ALL of it. Take Nothing for granted : EDUCATION & Knowledge

Quite frank : Their are some that have - gift's and specialties, some that should not for they try to buy the game - with out effort or knowledge or application of self.

Maybe I'll fly a Kite today

We "play" games. We "play" sports. You can't say we fly helicopters because that would give impression of full size. So u need a qualifier. I usually say rc helicopters. Or radio control helicopter.

You gotta watch taking it too seriously though. It gets me when ppl take this hobby too seriously. Its just recreation. Danger doesn't really warrant re titling. Dudes playing soccer don't stop you from saying they are playing.

Can you see an athlete say "hey man we're not playing here."

or "This isn't a game, you know!"

LOL uh huh...and how seriously do you take him after that...probably even less than if he just let it go.

Yeah it is just a game. They are playing. And so are we. We're playing. So if its a "toy," great. Kids fight over toys. And looking around here, so do we!

That said, "it has the power of a lawnmower without a guard and can put you in the morgue" is ok to say, when necessary. But I only say this if asked what happens if it hits someone, or if they come to flying field and don't have proper awareness, etc. But leave it to that, not bringing it out up front trying to impress people with your hobby.

I have fun with my toy helicopters. Labels don't change a thing.

I hear you guys. Greyeagle said it all some of us should not be doing this just like some people should not be driving a car or flying a full size aircraft.

This is one of the definitions of "toy".

"•an object, esp. a gadget or machine, regarded as providing amusement for an adult."

It is what it is. Deal with it dude!

Just toying with you man.

PS: A gun is a toy if you're using it for amusement.

"Toy RC helicopter decapitates man"

This is where I get a little pissed off. The heli is a 4ish horse "toy" flown by a 19 Year old "man". If he had been killed with a 5 horse Go-kart is would have said "teen killed by off road vehicle".

It's a perceptual double standard.

Apologies in advance for the extreme example.

Tighten it tell it loosens then back it off a quarter

ever been to FAO Schwarz? Some really expensive Toys in there too...

ITS A TOY...
in our case it serves only to amuze and entertain and in most cases empty our wallets...the very definition of toy....a play thing that is not a tool, nor nessessary for job, career, or life (though some would argue those)

and yeah I play with expensive TOYS.

I know guys whose wives and girlfriends should also be considered toys...

showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...

The difference between men and boys is the price of their toys.

Who said that?

If not a toy...then what?

My opinion...toy.

Professional football players "play" for a living.
If the coach tells them to get a ball and go play, they don't get butt hurt over it

I literally never use the word literally right.

Its a toy get over it.

Our hobby is pretty gay when it comes to recreational activities. This is in opinion of the general public i.e majority.

I always have and always will love the challenge, complexity and reward it brings but lately technology has taken the edge off all that an unfortunately in my opinion, is making our heli's seem more and more like toys than mechanical machines.

I laugh when I see some one spend $300.00 for a Flying Piece of re- cycled stryrofoam peanut's - Then They call " Can you Fix It ?? "

Oh please no. There's way more negative connotation with this word than "Toy."

How about, "Radio Control Model Helicopter."

But seriously, why try to impress people with your hobby? Do it for yourself. Trying to impress others is one of the most exasperating goals a person can strive for. There will always be people who are unimpressed with your accomplishments. The more you look for validation in what you do in life, the less you receive. And demanding validation only incurs ridicule.

Anyone in the hobby knows these are toys that deserve respect. If someone outside the hobby calls it a toy, why should that take enjoyment out of the hobby?

I'm certain athletes don't take exception to calling their hobby a game. They are out there enjoying what they do regardless of its title.

You're dang right I play with toy helicopters and I love every bit of it.

TLDR: Why worry what it's called. Enjoy the hobby. Do it for you.
Deal with it.
Indeed.
