I suspect a lot, if not most, will put up Avatars other than their own pic.

I'd rather see people's faces than an avatar. As Ryan said, you can go to a funfly and have no idea that guy you're talking to in person is the same guy you've been chatting on RunRyder for the last 3 years.

Agree with actual picture rather than Avatar. If you have nothing to hide and you want to earn people's trust, show yourself!

Then why doesn't everyone use their real name instead of a made up moniker?
That's no different than having an Avatar!
Who is hiding anything?

I think I'll do both and come out of the closet!

Do we have an option to change our names here?

why follow the norm?

How about placing photo IN the profile page instead?

THE page you go to for more information on that person...(supposedly).

Use a Gravatar?

Just a thought - but what about implementing the profile picture (or signature line picture) as a "Gravatar?"

The Gravatar is rapidly gaining acceptance on many applications that I work on. It uses a centralized database, so RR users would update it there and any online service or commercial application would draw from it to populate a post, for example.

That would keep it simple for you (Mark) and allow users to utilize a common profile picture across the internet for all those sites now using Gravatars.

I think usernames are useful because it is often much easier to remember who said what and when when they have a clever screen name. That said, I have always had the opinion that if you have the gonads to make a comment about something on these forums, then you ought to be able to back it with your name. This is especially true for anyone representing a company. Thus from day one I have always signed my name. And let's not start a pissing match about this. It's just my opinion, and if you don't want to sign your real name, I'm fine with that.

I have always used my real name on every forum I've ever been a member of. I do not understand not doing so.

I can envision a utopia in which all accounts on RR are verified for identity. That should help with trust when buying and selling.

However, posting a picture of myself I probably won't do. I don't like pictures of myself. Lol.
