For my birthday this weekend, my wife bought me bought me my first quad copter. A litte HeliMax unit. Cute. I'd never flown a quad, so I decided to read the owner's manual. Has a camera? Takes either photos or video? Selectable in flight from the transmitter? No way. WAY!

This silly little thing is more fun than it has any right to be. Flies great, and the photos and video are much better than I ever thought they'd be.

I gotta get more batteries, as it is so much fun I don't want to wait for the original battery to charge between flights.

As soon as the wind dies down around here, I'm going to take it up to get some photos of our roof. Goodness, gravy, actually using it for something useful!

Gerry

This is where it all starts, Next up for you will be the Flamewheel f450 and naza m v2 controller with FPV. I was a plank flyer all my life too, Then helis, but these quads! Man what a blast it is to fly them and do photography. FPV is just off the charts. Actually seeing what the quad sees and flying with the goggles on is quite an experience. No thought of getting disoriented, you just turn the way you want to go, so much fun! Your adventure has begun. You better give your wife a hug! Have fun with it all, and happy roof photos.

Heliman, the missus has been trying to convince me to get a quad for months now. She's currently looking at a unit that comes bundled with a GoPro. It may also have FPV capabilities, and it also comes with a 2.4 GHz downlink. She has RealFlight 6.5 but has been hesitant to try one of my helis. I think I'm going to have her try the quad later today.

Ronald, I'm pretty lucky. Besides the quad, she also got me an Align 500E fuselage set for one of my 450's as well as two very nice SlotIt slot cars, a killer McClaren and one of the Jaguars that ran at Lemans in 1991. Hobby Shop trips are never an issue, as she owns four out our 5 commercial slot car tracks (three set up here in the house and two in storage) and owns more slot cars and die cast than I do. She probably has close to 500 1/24 scale NASCAR and at last count had over 2,500 Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars.

careful

Don't use the 2.4 downlink with the 2.4 radio. At least I wouldn't chance the inteference possibility. If you go FPV all you will need is a cable for the Go Pro and a trasmitter with goggles. Fatshark has some great starter packages out there. Go with a 250mw TX 5.8ghz and the cable for the go pro. if you don't want goggles, you can do a ground station with a monitor, either way, it is awesome. I use Hobby wireless or Getfpv.

Good luck. Steer clear of the 2.4, And in America we can not run the 900mhz stuff, .... it is saved for law enforcement and the such, so stick to the 5.8ghz.

Thanks for the head's up on the downlink frequency issues.

I had the wife flying the quad this morning. After three flights, she can comfortably hover and gently maneuver the quad around the room. She feels comfortable with it versus a standard heli. So between the quad and her RealFlight simulator, she's slowly getting more involved with helis.
