ernie, without the haters such a thread would be booring.

Those people mostly never designed a single part nor a complete system and do not have the slightest idea how much effort and dedication is put into those things they have in their hands.

The hd500 is a nice design. I am looking forward to the flight experience of the owners.

+1 on the need to be positive... Regardless of what we fly or what brand or model gets us excited, why cannot we just be happy to share this great hobby? Diversity of options and tastes makes it interesting... How boring if everyone had the same stuff at the flying field.

Thank you for sharing the details and pictures of this new bird, and keep the passion and excitement up... Looking forward to hear more on the build and of course the first flights.

That's a really great looking canopy. What is the Cell? Is it that box looking thing in your parts pictures? I'm having a hard time picturing it. I'd imagine its similar in design to the main plate assembly on a Goblin, but machined out of a solid piece. Is that accurate?

I have to comment on how it is packaged. If they put as much effort into the heli as they did on packaging this thing it looks like you have a winner there. I just bet that the machining on the bird is top notch.

It's really cool how they use that slot in the cell to work as an anti rotation mechanism. Neat design.

Very cool design. What I don't like, however, is how exposed and vulnerable the battery is. It's exposed right in a common crush zone. I would be inclined to make the carbon fiber frames come forward on the sides to protect the battery.

Love the canopy. Not so much the landing gear.

I'm curious to hear what the all-up weight is. It might be a bit heavy. But, we'll see.

Well - sorry for the delay posting but I was busy getting the heli ready to go and get the maiden flight done. In addition its not the only forum to communicate the info. So it simply takes some time.

Has it all been just easy build? No sure not since this is the first production batch and yes I received the first production heli shipped due to the shipping options I picked.

So a few issues have simply beed the pin holding the tail pulley to the tail shaft needed some cleaning because it was too tight of a fit. So I just cleaned it up incl. the hole of the tail shaft.
The more critical issue was a washer that has been 3 mm and turned out that in production unit it should have been 2 mm. I grinder mine down and actually had a few calls with the owner of the company. They have been so kind calling me directly to discuss the options. Any owner contacting them will get the 2 mm replacement spacer supplied directly. It will get into mail next week as soon as you contact them. Great customer support and even better to call me to walk through the options.

At the end ... did get the maiden flight done and yes after a bit of a mishap I had a few successful flights. Mishap has been caused by a simple mistake with bad outcome on m,y end. Turned out that the Heli did hold up perfectly well. Only main and tail blades needed to be replaced. So I could take off right after fixing my setup issue.

And Why cell? Look at the components. They have a high sophisticated cell as main part where all gets mounted to that. This one is machined on a 5 axis high precision CNC machine. Overall I am very pleased. The heli feels very agile and I did run mine from 1900 up to 2700 rpm today. Second flight had 1900/2200 and 2400 rpm set. Great handling even at 1900 rpm. So all bashing friends - you can try bashing but it still remains a great heli. Has a new heli hitting the market issues? We know thats common and as long as manufacturers respond right away - its OK for me and I have no issue trying new stuff. I actually love it.

The bird looks nice, the one thing I dont care much for about it is the skids, I have not found a set of carbon skids that I thought looked right on any bird yet though. Other than that judging by looks alone, I like it.

Good review with detailed pictures. How are you liking the BK servos? Great choice for esc also, Kontronik is top notch. Santa looks quite pleased with the build.

How much does it weigh?

Also, I notice in your pictures that even ready to fly it leans back on the skids. Why would they design it like that?

Man, those mechanics are gorgeous. too pretty for that canopy. I love the innovation, and I hope it flies great for you. Gonna take some getting used to. At first glance, with the canopy on, looks like an Align, and I am not an align fan. I have respect for the name though, as they are probably one of the biggest reasons this hobby is where it is today, I just don't like the looks of an align. As for the skids, the Goblin skids took some getting used to, as these on this animal will too. It is hard to innovate in this hobby it seems, and they have pulled it off, mind you, not perfectly. For real, those skids, need to be, at the very least, half the length they are. and some angle would be awesome. The canopy looks like minicopter and align met in an alley and had a late night escapade.. maybe its just the paint scheme I don't care for...

Bottom line, that frame and the complete belt drive system.. awesome. Good thread, good build, thanks for bringing it to us to evaluate. Hopefully the designers are reading this and taking notes.

Excellent and honest review of this heli thanks for taking time to share your thoughts and tips. Also, I really like the chocolate Santa!! did he make it to the filed for the maiden flight? I am in the process of starting a Logo 500SE build and I am jealous wish I had the Cell 500 now.

And now for a few hash tags because I can #######

For a little clarification -> how did little chocolate santa make it into the build pictures. I ordered my Kontronik Jive 100 and Pyro motor and ... They have been so kind shipping it from Germany with the chocolate santa. Since I use the electronics in the build and it is Christmas time - I had to have a bit Christmas feeling in the pictures. I actually would have taken little santa to the field but he would melt at the current temperatures (not just by sitting in the HD500).

About having it lean backward a bit. Yes some noticed correct. It mainly is because the rear velcro I put a bit far back there and was too lazy changing it. Will get that adjusted most likely today so I can put the batteries further to the front.

Looking at the CF landing skids - its a matter of taste and since I did like it on other helis I do like that look. They seem to be very solid and I do not expect them breaking easy.

Today is a bit relaxing time and therefore mostly for dialing in the parameters better. I am working on the maiden video. Looks like the initial roll over the ground on first try as well as the 2 flights after that came out good in video quality. So tonight I will post the video.

@Noobyflyer - thanks for your wonderful bashing comments to scare people for nothing. You are simply wrong about a few comments that have no basis and turn that either you do not really know or I am not sure what your interest is to make such comments to sound scaring people about a well working product.

1. Canopy -> it was planned for shorter motors and people like me using the larger motors just do a simple mod. You say Goblin is so much better canopy? Not sure why. You say the canopy is going to rub off wires? Where? its not even hitting any wires in the front I I protected my wires (my choice of placement and others do it different). -> Sorry but your statement is unrealistic and just kind form of bashing. Nevertheless a new canopy has been designed and all be surprised it is certainly going to look cool and possibly work better for taller motors. Again its my motor choice not the recommended motor.

2. Battery placement. Why is the battery at risk? You may mix up SAB and HD500. The battery is hanging well protected by frame left and right and canopy in the front. No moving parts in the area. So I assume you even love bashing Banshee, TDR, Diabolo, Voodoo helicopters. All high end machines and all with very similar battery placement. Amazing why the high end machine do that isn't it? Looks like to you they are all fools. Actually the opposite. They protect the batteries from moving parts. If you are interested I can explain to you the 2 batterie fires I had in helis this year while flying. And no the design is more safe this way than others.

3. Why does blade designing help to make good helicopters? I understand you hate the designer because he did something you and I may not be able to pull off. They designed a heli and did bring it to the market within one year time frame. One year - think about it for some time and than keep bashing.

If you simply hate me - go for it I will stop showing up on this forum. I thought this is a forum where the hobby is enjoyed and not poison spread around. Sorry but I have no stake with you and do not see what I did to you to get such love posts from your end. Just stay cool even Florida is warm at the moment.

Hate you? No! Not at all.

Edited my post just to put the grinch away for the holidays.

Some brave souls have to go first to report back to the community so that we can proceed to spend our hard earned or choose another heli. And you did just that and with pictures for nothing in return. So, thanks.

Either way, if it flies and it's fun, then right on. Looks like it does both for you so it's a home run and brought you the joy you had waited a long time for.

I sure as hell can't design or manufacture a heli
