I usually put the long bits (boom, blades, etc) in a USPS golf club box and then the pod in a regular box with canopy on and filled with foam popcorn.

(the foam popcorn also cleans everything off real nice)

What I've done in the past is remove boom, skids and head and made my own box or find one that fits. Look up shipping rates if shipping USPS. I forgot the max size before they charge more for balloon rate. Over size.

Depending on the size of box you have, definitely take the boom off. I sometimes will remove the head and landing gear if space is tight. So far I have had good luck with the canopy mounted as long as its padded well and there isn't a lot of pressure on it from the packing. In my opinion the bigger the box the better, but careful because packing material adds up in $$ quick.

I have found that Fed ex ground is usually the cheapest option for a large heli and have not had one damaged to date. If you want to be anal take some good close up pics before you pack it to prove its pre shipped condition(just in case) and I usually will get insurance on anything over a couple hundred bucks. Good luck!
