Hi all

I'm upgrading a brand new Trex 550E DFC from 520 to 550 mm blades. The kit will take to 550mm blades.
Do I need to put bigger tail blades on this Heli for the bigger main blades?

The kit is NOT the PRO version, but the STANDARD version with normal gearing and 520mm blades standard.
I looked at the Align website and both Pro and normal version have same diameter tail rotor, so I'm guessing no need to get bigger tail blades?

Thanks

No you don't need bigger tail blades providing you run enough head speed. Im not even sure you can run bigger tail blades with 550's.

60% of the time, it works every time!

I still run the stock tail blades even after I fitted the 550 main blades
I have not had a problem with them yet

If it is a DFC kit with the 600 boom, you can run 550s with 95s without any problems. I fly 556/96 blades on mine and the tail is extremely solid with very good tail authority.

Thanks for all the answers gents.
I bought Flybarless 553 mm Edge blades.
Will fit them soon.

Do the bigger blades improve handling noticeably and reduce flight times that much?

I've also decided to paint the bottom half of the canopy dayglo orange, so I don't loose orientation as much!!

Thanks for the helpful info

Yes, there is a slight noticeable difference in handling and flight time. It will fly more stable, but yet sacrifice some of the agility aspects if you fly 3d. Flight time will drop 20-45 secs since you are adding weight/more lift depending on headspeed and your pitch range.

My tail wouldn't hold when I went to 550mm blades at 2100 hs. I didn't think I could run larger tail blades, so I changed the tail gear ratio to the v1 gearing, speeding up the tail. Super solid now.

That was the big drawback with the 550 and 600 v2's, dropping the tail ratio to run a higher headspeed. Most of us don't need 2400-2600 on a 550 so using the v1 tail or changing the tail pushrod hole to the middle on the arm might help. I've seen and heard folks using edge 553's and 92 on the tail with no issue also. Throw a pair of "trueblood greens" on the main head if running dfc.
