So, now that the features of the DX9 have been announced and it has two features that the DX18 does not currently have (voice alerts and wireless trainer), is there any hope of the DX18 getting those features?

To be honest, as a DX18 owner, I feel quite betrayed at this point.

Hard to say but I kind of think the DX18 lacks the hardware for speech in its current configuration. In the picture of the 9 it looks like on the right side of the screen there is a larger grilled area that is probably a small speaker as opposed to the little piezo emitter on the other radios below the back and clear buttons.Wireless trainer...Hmmm.No idea how it is actually implemented but if it is using the same RF hardware I guess it would be doable.
They are definitely tight lipped about new stuff so I guess we will have to wait and see.

I would guess no. For one, the DX18 lacks the audio output jack - so you'd depend on the speaker - which as aerocal pointed out, probably isn't sufficient in the 18. Also, I'm guessing they used a different microcontroller with DSP capabilities. Just a guess at this point though.

Perhaps there will be a hardware upgrade service available? That would be nice.

I looked at the back side of the DX9 and there appears to be some hardware related to the RF trainer link. Hope there will be an add on (plug into the trainer port) to the other Spektrum & JR radio's to add the functionality to them. The speach is really cool but I think you'll need ear buds to hear it unless it's quiet and you are the only one flying. Certainly couldn't hear it at IRCHA flightline

That would be incredibly easy to accomplish. Take an existing receiver and reprogram it to provide a PPM stream output. Easy cheesy. Unfortunately, the JR/Spektrum trainer port does not provide power, so that would have to be taken care of.

Just wish I hadn't bought the DX18 a few months ago. DX8 resale value will obviously fall through the floor. I bet the DX18 value will also take a nice hit and new DX18 sales will fall.

There are two ports on the back of the DX9, one for audio output and the other for the trainer.

If I was a betting man, I would bet that there isn't going to be an upgrade for the DX18.

Hey, you can always sell the 18 and get a 9! That's a downgradeded upgrade ...

Does the DX18 do anything that the DX9 does not? (not factoring in the extra channels).

DX9 wireless trainer fun...

You bind your buddys radio to yours unbeknown to him and have a little "wireless" fun.

You no longer have to hold the trainer button...as soon as you move any stick you have control.

The volume is adjustable as well as vibration levels. Its pretty loud BUT you cant use voice with tone as the voice becomes muffled. You are better off using an earphone (as in one) in a busy flight line. Nice to hear any emergency call outs in the flight line...just in case.

I heard you will be able to record your own voice so that probably means you will also be able to play music instead at the flick of a switch.

Im using voice mainly for warnings and some telemetry info such as engine temp and battery voltage at the push of a button.

~~Enjoying the hobby one flight at a time~~

I have both the DX9 and the DX18. For Heli's I can't think of anything the DX18 does that the DX9 doesn't. For airplanes there is all the additional mixing you can do for high servo count airframes.

Ability to use 18 channels. I just finished a camera hex copter and used 17 of the 18 channels. It was a complex build.

Related to the DX18 QQ - QUIQUE SOMENZINI edition.

BUT - the Spektrum site does not say anything about the QQ edition having different gimbals then the regular DX18 ... unless this counts:

– Optional 34mm orange-anodized stick ends

There is a lot of chatter on the plane sites about QQ gimbals and whether or not the DX9 has them ? Is it all BS ? I have noticed that guys don't know what the word gimbal actually means lately. Used for everything from pots to stick ends.

What I seem to remember reading about "QQ gimbals" is that the DX18 and DX18QQ were built in different places and that's the only actual difference. As in no design difference, just differences due to manufacturing and factory setting of the gimbals.
