I just received the 700 size Starflex rotorhead from HeliScale. This head will be installed on my latest build, a MarvelCraft 700 size AS350.

My first impression is that I like it. The design is well thought out and it looks very scale in appearance. It even has dummy dampers! The head style is rigid, no damping built in and it's designed with 90 degrees of phasing. I'll still check it out and make minor phase adjustments as needed. All of the parts fit very well and there is no binding in the grips or linkages. This head also comes with small fully bushed spherical rod ends for the control rods from the swash to grips. These give it a nice scale look. I'm using longer control balls on the swash, so I still need to check for interference on the threads that protrude to the inside. If they are close, I'll shorten the threads.

This is what came in the box:

Like all new rotor heads I completely disassembled everything and inspected the contents and order of parts assembly, then reassembled with locktite on all fasteners. At first glance I thought there were no thrust bearings, but when I took the trunions apart, they were in there! The brass mounts that locate the trunions in the hub are tapped for the flat head screws, so I was careful not to over tighten them and strip the brass threads. Tighten them just enough to clamp the mount snug. I also like the blade grip design. There is a step machined into the grip that registers on the trunion, so there's no wiggle in the 2 grip halves when they are assembled. I'm currently painting the head cap and blade grips, so I'll continue the assy tomorrow night.

Thanks Doc. Here she is painted and sitting on the mechs. My application requires longer control rods from the swash to grips, so I'm making them now. I also just got the paint for the red, blue and yellow stripes on the grips.

So, I flew this head on the pod/boom mechs that were in my AS350 (she's being painted right now) and it flew great! I changed the phasing a little bit in the vbar program because I chose to omit the grip spacers on the head. It tracked fine and was very responsive. All in all, a very nice piece for the money. I can't wait to get the mechs back in the fuse and button her up for scale masters.

Barry,

That looks beautiful. I just got the same head for my Graupner AS350.
If you need any close up time with an A-star I am a senior helicopter mech with LA County Sheriff and we have 15 of these birds and we're at the Long Beach airport off of Lakewood and the 405.

Let me know

Thanks for the cool offer, I may take you up on that. I already have my heli detailed and in paint, but you never know when I might get the itch to do a bigger one in the LA county sherrifs scheme. Do you have any other helis on the tarmac over there? I need detailed pics of a schweizer 300 and also a bell 407.
