you're likely just having trouble understanding what the radio is telling you. so, i added some extra explanation

So, there's a coupla things to get your head wrapped around here:
1- the 401 simply takes 'gain values' from 0-100 and interprets them differently. values from 0-50 are really rate mode gains. 0=no gain/rate mode. 50= 100% gain/rate mode. values 51-100 are Heading Hold, abbrevieated HH (or AVCS in futabaspeak) gains. 51=no gain/HH mode. 100=100% gain/hh mode.

got it? good, moving on.

to the uninitiated, the menus are really cryptic. so, looking at the tables you posted:

RATE: really these should be called your gains. 'rate' is confusing since it has nothing to do with 'rate mode'. so, keep in mind these values are your two gain VARIABLES. you have the first gain value (labeled 0) set to 53%. the second gain value (labeled 1) is set to zero. the important thing to understand is the two values must be assigned to something. the values themselves are only assigned to the variable (0 or 1)

RATE
0:53% <-- variable 0 has a value of 53 here
1:0% <-- variable 1 has a value of 0 here

the F MODE is where you assign the above variable to the modes. currently you have both normal mode and stunt mode assigned to variable 0 (above) which as a 53% gain.

making sense here?

F MODE
norm :0
stnt :0

let's try an example:

RATE
0:72%
1:12%
F MODE
norm :1
stnt :0

don't cheat. try do deceiper what your radio will do with the above numbers before i tell you below

ok, above you've assigned variable 1 (0) to a value of 72. In the 401 this is interpreted as a HH gain just shy of 50% of the range of HH values. (remember 51-100 is HH mode. 75 would be 1/2 way in the HH range. so, 72 is just short of that)
variable 2 (1) is set to 12. this is a Rate gain just shy of 25% of the rate values. remember these are just values. they're not actually assigned to a flight mode until you do that in the F MODE menu.

your Flight mode assignments are normal: 1, meaning normal mode is using variable 2 (1) or the rate gain of 12. stnt is assigned to variable 1 (0) or the HH gain of 72.

clear as mud yet?

feel free to ask any questions. it's kindof a tough cookie to swallow as a beginner.

if it ain't broke, break it.

depends on your heli. you posted neither the model nor radio you're using. so, best I can do is try to explain what the numbers mean.

however, if you just want to try rate mode, try this:

RATE
0:53%
1:24%
F MODE
norm :0
stnt :1

with those settings, you need to initialize the heli in normal flight mode, since this is the only mode with heading hold assigned now--and the 401 must be initialized in HH. (should boot to a solid red light).

then, when you flip to stunt the light should turn blue (rate).

word to the wise...i'd set up stunt mode throttle and pitch curves as a mirror of your normal mode. otherwise, more than just your gain will be changing when you flip to stunt. could be a scary flip of the switch since you don't know how the tail will react with an untested gain setting.

if it ain't broke, break it.

that's funny I tried what ya said and the gyro light was solid, flipped the aux switch forward and F mode switch to 1 and the light went out+ now the T/R acts like its in rate, so now how do I get back in HH?

I flipped the switches back to where they were but the tail is still in rate

No no no. The aux switch has nothing to do with it. You've selected auto mode which means gain is automatically set by choosing flight mode. Leave aux2 switch alone. With the settings I gave you normal mode is HH. Stunt is rate. Period.

if it ain't broke, break it.
