I have both the Hyperion and the PL-8. Maybe there is more to the Hyperion available than I am using, but I have to give the edge to the PL-8 in terms of flexibility.

I can charge two of whatever size packs I want with the Hyperion, but I can do 6 at a time on the PL-8. I find the PL8 less work intensive to set the programs, but I feel the Hyperion gives me just a little bit better accuracy on my packs.

You really can't go wrong with either.

Charger choice
I'm using the Thunder Power TP820CD and love it. I use it for my cars and helis. I haven't run in to any situation where I wished I had something different. This charger is a beast.

A main consideration on purchasing a charger is what are you currently flying, and what do you eventually want to fly. A lot of us (me included) spend a lot of money upgrading charging systems as we go bigger so my suggestion would be to get a good quality charger to support your needs/future needs now. I have a PL8 and an ICharger 306B, each one can back up the other with no issue in case of a failure of one of them. I use the 306B for my MCPX BL and 450 batteries, the PL8 for the 550 and 700 batteries. I can parallel charge six batteries at once on each charger.
As far as a place to purchase, you can't go wrong with Dale at BuddyRC or Dave at Progressive RC. I have dealt with both and you won't do better as far as customer service and product support.

PL8
Hey Quick Question for you guys with the PL8. I just got one today from my LHS and was told that this thing is a beast. I also purchased a 1200W 60A ps.

Not sure of its full capabilities yet but how does this thing keep all the individual cells balanced in parallel mode. I tried charging 2 5s in series using the XH board but the charger gives info for only 1 pack - So my question would be is the charger considering the 10s to only 5s in terms of balancing?

Please help - Thanks.

You would want to charge the 5s packs in parallel then connect in series for use in the Heli.

Charger
Need to ask a question, Ralph said he can charge 6 batterys on the PL8, so you can take a 5000ma 6cell(22.2v)45C battery and charge 6 of them at 20amps on a PL8. Bobby(don't forget you haft to have a 24v-36v power supply on these big chargers to get there)

No!!! You need to put the packs in parallel! If you put the packs in series and then connect the balance leads to the XH board, you are putting the packs in series and parallel at the same time. Not good! Sparks would have flown followed by something melting.

When connected in parallel, the charger will see it as one 5S pack. The packs need to be in the same charge state when connected.

John,

Thanks for the reply!

So when I am charging the packs with the XH board the charger asks me to select for parallel mode and I selected 2P in the menu - Is that Parallel Charging?

And once I select that how does the charger know how many volts per pack in each cell in terms of balancing? So let's say I plugged in 2 packs of 5s each to be charged in parallel. So technically I am charging 10s but the balancing menu during charge shows the volts for only 5 cells instead of 10 - Am I assuming that each cell is the median of the actual 2 cells that are charging?

Sorry this whole parallel charging is very new to me and I just got the charger yesterday and am a bit confused.

Thanks again,
