I see smoke from a motor he analyzes a lot before take-off.. looks nervous. Not a big fan of multis, but wasn't it supposed to "land safe with 1 motor shut" as it is an octo? was it pilot error?
In any case it looks like pilot error to me, he wasn't ready for this job, the body language describes his amateur skills, guess he is the one of those who brings down the community.

I also saw the smoke on take off, I think it should have landed at that point!

Something was wrong right away. Typically I like to hover low just a bit first and check controls before flying off but maybe that's just me.

Pilot error maybe not flight skill wise but pilot error as in preflight checks, and knowing that everything checks out before flying. Guy looked nervous ( which anyone flying these things usually are due to the $ at stake) but to me looked like a fine example of not preflight checking everything. Especially when there is smoke on take off that's never a good sign.

The ESC burned out. What was he thinking going like a bat out of hell showing off. Thats what you get. The thing was in front of his face when the smoke showed so he should have landed then and there. If he had good skills he would have landed it anyway with one motor gone. It is an octo.

I'm not convinced there was smoke on take off. I saw what looked like a smear when it was passing above head level but it was extending out to the right and is probably due to the low resolution of the video and compression.

Maybe someone can take a screen cap of the smoke and point it out to me?

I see an over-zealous pilot who has disregarded the public safety and compromises our hobby.

Did I win?

2.4G downtown adjacent to buildings not wise. The downtown core is flooded in the ISM bands (2.4G), in addition to all the buildings causing multipath signal interference. Basically he was doomed from the start, there is too much interference, regardless of what technology the receiver is using, if there isn't a good signal, anything could happen.
In this situation the 72MHz Licensed band may have been a safer bet.
Irregardless he made a poor decision flying around building within the city streets

NZ CAA is chasing this one and have refered it to the Police.
While the CAA (in NZ) are slowly getting some "policies" in place, they state that as soon as a model is being flown for hire, it is a commercial UAS. I have heard that the Police are looking at using the (excuse the wording not being perfect but you will get the idea) "misuse of an aircraft in a dangerous manor cause damage or injury" or similar law.

p.s. It was brought to CAA attention from someone on a forum - not me

Did anybody notice that the aircraft piros while climbing? I bet he was not ready for it. you can see a slight wobble as if he had lost orientation just before it darts towards the other building.

Combine a burned out ESC, a pilot who never experienced a burned out ESC, a tight urban space, & some image stabilization. It barely missed a few cars. The machines can feel bulletproof to a pilot who hasn't experienced a failure, but those 1 hung lo brand ESC's, cracked solder joints, flimsy motor windings eventually get you.

A list of mistakes as long as your arm there.....
No traffic control aT the start, to a phone in his pocket at the end, with a lil high power take off thrown in for good measure.

Back to school for him !

Heres another one that made my hair curl a bit...
