Hello,
I want to build a VTOL capable of long flight duration.

Imagine the following:
A regular tail-rotored helicopter with an additional forward thrusting propeller (like a gyrocopter).

1.For efficient forward flight it would fly like an autocopter with the motor driving only the forward thrusting rotor - relying on autorotation for lift.
2.For hovering it would fly like a regular heli (with the forward thrusting rotor idle).

What do you think?

Sounds good but complex! There was a real heli long ago ,,forget the name with a pusher prop at the tail,,but I dont think it was auto rotating when being pushed by the prop.. I will have to look it up.

Setup is everything, All my heli's can fly far better than I can pilot them

I do have a question though to you autogyro guys,,,is an auto gyro fuel efficient in the real world compared to other aircraft? I can't imagine it is.

A hybrid heli uses the pusher engine for higher speed as the Sikorsky X-2. In order for this to work the collective needs to be pulled back a good deal, and as far back as 0 degrees. THe spinning rotor is then acting as a wing, however, the X-2 is a coaxial to eliminate dissymmetry of lift.

I have been thinking about building a autogyro that has collective, and cyclic, because I know this works, and it would make a good learning experience for future projects. Most do not have collective. I could also live without it for the first one, but gotta have cyclic control, and a large rudder.

I would recommend starting with a conventional autogyro first, and then after a learning period, you could start experimenting with different ideas.
