Jim i am gonna have to dissagree with ya on that manno, i love ya but gonna have to dissagree
it is true, a multi blade setup of any blade count can be squirelly, its not a bolt things on and go fly like many think. with the proper set up and blades, any head can be flown without stab systems. the OF heads and baldes combination is a sure fire hit everytime because their blades are purposely designed for multiblade use. I have had the best luck with the century heads and the rotortech blades as well as the funkey fiberglass blades.
to get a good flying setup, you have to use blades that idealy fit the machine and head. you may have to do like i did and experiment with different brands and types.
now, many folks say screw all that research, time and money and gimme a stab unit and forget about it. that works great because these stab units especially the newer ones, will fly any head n blade combo like it was nothing.
me, i am old school and poor , i got into the multibladed bit before the stab units came about so i took the time to figure out how to make them work without too much effort.also the new tech with blade design helped a lot. get a combo that doesnt work well and like Jim says, you will have a handful especially in the wind, it will be like being in a fight with a bobcat in a phone booth, so you can see where he is coming from.
i have a few of my machines i fly without a stab unit. and i have a couple of stab units ive played with and am still playing with while waiting on the perfect scaler to put them in.
here are a few vids. the md500 is using century aerotech 550mm wood blades that come with the hawk sport, the rotorhead is my own composition using bits and parts from other helis bolted to an aluminum hub i machined.
the 58D is using rotortech 610mm blades on a century diamond head and the apache is using 660mm funkey glassblades as well.

5 blade set up

I actually practice doing slow 8's in ground affect. No problem landing "nose in" And I have lots of practice in the wind because it's always windy here...I'm confident in my flying to give it a shot..Thanks for replys
