1. Have a pro pilot show up always helps.

2. Prizes for pilots

3. On Saturday afternoon, do a auto rotation contest w/ prize for most
points. (Always fun to watch)

4. If the field doesn't have power, provide some generators.

I'll add to the list music, and either a food vendor or a grill setup.

But what really makes it fun is the people

1. Pro pilots with afternoon demo flights. Try to encourage a fun rivalry between two groups, say team Align vs. team Miniature, etc…
2. Prizes for pilots
3. Autorotation contest w/ prize is fun – can do closest to a certain point, landing on a table or car roof, or a ‘style auto’ where the crowd applause determines the winner. Style autos are always cool and provides great crashes too.
4. Electric hook-up is a huge plus
5. Music and an upbeat MC
6. Food service
7. Onsite vendor for parts
8. most important = good people!
9. Post lots of pics and videos after

A bunch of good guys show up that make it enjoyable to share others company. A large amount of time at a fun fly is spent watching and talking helis with other pilots and sharing info and ideas.

Everything that was already said plus:

You will most likely have to start small, funflys gain good reputations if they are handled well and naturally grow. Planning and organization are key - food, parking, camping, etc, and most important are lots of volunteers to do all of the tasks.

Maybe I should take notes,

Here are my tactics:

Dont ask for club volunteers
Dont advertise
Dont ask for prizes
Dont pay to bring any pros
No vendors
Don't put anyone on the mike (unless is Big D)
Dont charge more than $20
No avant hoochies

I dont know what else not to do, but the folks still pour in.
I forget;

I Do:
Have the best RC friends in the midwest, treat them like royalty.
Im not changing anything.

Maybe the organizers should have the MC's tryout for the position by posting a video on YouTube.

Great idea Ace. We can have the girls tryout the same way. I already know a few good sites for videos of girls.

1.)Don't have it on a weekend that is a holiday.
2.)Don't have a carnival atmosphere until you have a good annual event. There's always IRCHA until then.
3.)More than one clean Porta-Potty.
4.)Some simple food to purchase for those who didn't bring anything.
5.)Enough pilot stations so there aren't long lines to fly.
6.)Don't make it a competitive event.
7.)Too many demos and it becomes boring and cuts into the Main Event...Fun Fly.

I might have to disagree here. Good food isn't too expensive and it can be easy to make. The key is to find the right people to make it happen. Find some good cooks and make some real BBQ. Skip the burgers and dogs. Everyone loves good food!

We have simple food like hot and moist Tri-Tip sandwiches and chips. Most people don't go to heli fun flys to eat. We all go into town in the evening and morning to sit down and eat good food. We include lunch with registration for the pilots. There is also a problem in some locales that don't allow food to be prepared at places like an RC field and charge for it to the public. That's why we keep it simple.

Sure, most don't go to a fun-fly just to eat, but all eat while at a fun-fly. When I go to a fun-fly I hate to have to pack up my stuff and leave the event to find some decent food.

Tri-Tip is great and it sure beats the burgers and dogs. Some locals do have restrictions so it's important to check first, however, those restrictions would apply to anything cooked, regardless of the type of food served.

I usually do pulled pork. It's simple, inexpensive, yeilds lots of sammies, and I time it so they come off the grill before serving time.
