I agree the Skookum looks more polished with the metal case.. and that is a factor with selection. However if the Ikon out performs the Skookum that would be the overriding reason for purchase.
yes but the HC3-SX also has a metal case but unlike the two mentioned it's self-leveling works awsome every time !

A metal case is not the be all and end all imho. Really depends on the type of metal and maybe the filtering electronics. All of this is way beyind me so I do not really know for sure.

For example, I had one heli that had a bit of emf noise and my Spektrum ar7200bx handled it fine. My hc3sx needed a little more help, a metal Spartan gyro plate sandwiched between a layer of 3m 4011 mounting tape. No big deal since this solved the problem 100% and the unit work perfectly now. In both cases I used a kontronik ring wrapped around the esc/throttle lead btw.

As far as selecting a fbl system it really depends on what you want it to do. If you want a very good fbl system that also gives you a very dependable 'captain rescue'. that is, auto-levelling with climbout to safety, the Helicommand hc3sx is the only one that does this right now.

Within ~5 years all good quality fbl systems will prpbably offer this anti-crash option imho. This will also probably work it's way down to mico bnf heli's as well!

The future of almost crash-proof heli's is on the horizon. Pity about the poor heli makers profits on spare parts, lol!!!

Cheers,
TomC

The HC looks good, but it needs a governor.

I'm very happy to just use my kontronik and yge esc's in-built gov's but for people who do not use these, or non-electric, I can see why you would want one.

Probably something that HC will add in the future but I don't think it's a high priority. In the meantime you can just use an external gov but you'll need to use a full Rx, not sats only, for spectrum. Should not be a show stopper imho, but up to you of course.

TomC

I say gov is a requirement on a Nitro. And the ability to know the collective and cyclic loads coming is pretty useful for both.

I received the Ikon today. The unit is very small and light.. A nice looking unit. I'm looking forward to see this unit in the air.. Just need a bit warmer temps.

Which FBL System next?

I like my Futaba 401 gyro the best for FBL. Never any issues, and I feel I have total control of my machine at all times. Of course that is the way I learned to fly FBL,back in the 80's, and with a Futaba BB Gyro,so it seems normal to me. Of course it is much better with a modern gyro, digital servos, and carbon blades. Nothing much to program except my SD-10G radio, and that is good.

Fut401 fbl? So not really any fbl system eh, just good thumbs. I think they normally refer to this as no-bar. Good on ya mate, lol!

NQNA, Just wondering why you had to plug your BeastX into a laptop to speed things up?

Default is 'Sport' mode which is very slow on cyclic and this doesn't change much all the way upto 'Extreme', only expo really changes.

IMO they need to get rid of these preset flight modes and just have 'Transmitter' mode, this mode allows you to fully adjust the expo and roll/flip rate using DR's all from your radio.

All thats left is to gradually increase Pitch Boost and Cyclic Response to your liking.

60% of the time, it works every time!

I don't know why, but the extreme mode on my beastx was ok, but not super fast. On the extreme mode with my ikon, it goes ballistic. I also like the fact that i can go from sport to extreme mode just from flipping a switch on my radio with the ikon.

You can with the BeastX in Transmitter mode, you just use your DR switches.

Cool, I will have to research that. I just noticed during setup that it makes you choose which mode you want.

Yeah if you TX has the ability to change the DR with a switch you can do it with BeastX also. I'm pretty sure my 8FG has the ability to do this just never got around in doing it. Right now my dual rates change from the Idle up switch...

I looked in the instructions and didn't find anything that allows you to change the modes. When I went through the setup for the Ikon, it specifically has a menu to set up three specific modes tailored to what I want. I read through the beastx instructions and found no such thing.

Having more than one mode would just confuse me! lol. I didn't even use dr's when I flew 3d planes! Just learned how to take off and land on full throws, just used more expo.

For the Ikon, it doesn't change the DR's as far as I can tell. It mainly either mellows it down or makes it more extreme depending on what I select. For the Ikon, it is done during the setup.
