I think it was a combination of price and ease of setup. The people who stuck with it and got all the correct info on setup got the best of the unit and still use it! To ad to that early versions of the firmware was less than polished!
The TotalG was price competitive with the VBar at the time of release but the software was not even in the same realm, With the VBar software being very user friendly with guides through every step and setup being a step by step affair it was easy for even a learner to get "Acceptable" flight from there heli compared to the very basic TotalG software that required more time thought to set up!
Forums also played a part in it's lack of popularity, If your not very bright don't buy a TotalG and if you do don't tell people about it on the Internet! lol

These days if you can’t get the price down in the $200-250 range it just won’t be very popular especially for those that are just moving up to larger FBL helicopters after learning on micros. Skookum finally realizes that with the SK540 which is very much more popular than the old very expensive 720 ever was.

BTW what’s the street price of the Total-G these days?

That’s definitely why they are not popular. They should either price it competitively or just give up on making a FBL controller. There are so many excellent FBL controllers on the market these days.
