From a recent read,

" Titanium bolts can replace both grade 5 and grade 8 steel bolts which have minimum UTS requirements of 120,000 psi and 150,000 psi respectively. Metric bolts with an 8.8 rating can be replaced with titanium while bolts with a 10.9 rating can sometimes be replaced with titanium depending on intended use. Any bolts with a rating over 10.9 rating should not be replaced with titanium."

i.e., don't replace your 12.9 capscrews with Ti. Awesome info on the Ti alloys guys, but are those alloys actually going to be used in a fastener application other than the space shuttle? I just don't trust the lower grades of Ti titanium which are easier to machine fasteners from...the exotic alloys come at a premium price and are even harder to tool, not worth the expense for my heli where a 12.9 capscrews will do the job just fine...

I love the 12.9 SHCS. You have to put a drop of oil on them to prevent them from rusting, but they are very strong and not too expensive.

I think Stainless Steel is good when you need a weak point in the airframe. I think the attachment of landing gear is good with stainless steel screws.

Aluminum screws are not good for anything. Those screws are extremely soft.

I have never seen a titanium screw, but they are very expensive.

But there has got to be thousands of alloys out there used in screws. What do they use on the F-22 fighters? zip ties? glue? The Space Shuttle is 30 year old technology. I want to know what is 2012 technology.
