I'm sure this is probably a familiar scenario; I can hover at an arbitrary spot in the air that seems nearly dead still. As soon as I put a cone or a flag down and try to hover over it I'm all over the place!

I guess it's partly the reality of having to hover at a particular spot rather than having lots of leeway to settle somewhere AND splitting my concentration by having to keep the flag in my periferal vision.

So, the question is; Is there any trick or tip to staying steady over the flags or is it just a matter of a zillion hours of practice?

with my nitro machines, i would angle the exhaust deflector straight down. Then if you richen the mixture, the smoke screen makes it harder to judge the exact position of the cone.

It's not crashed 'til it hits the ground

This area of practice really needs two (or three) persons to help.

If you stand in the circle (exactly the placement you normally do) and have one of your helpers hold the model over the flag (center main shaft and proper hight). This will teach you what the model looks like in the perfect attitude.

Next, have your helper (standing in far judge areas) give you verbal information as you hover over the flag (forward back; too high or too low and rotated in or rotated out). It's allot easier to hear them with electric motors.

Finally, if you have a third person, they can stand in a line that extends from the two flags and help to let you know if you are "inside" or "outside" of the points.

Once you get the flags good, the "inside" and "outside" will be the most important thing you can do.

It's tough and frustrating but that's a way to do it. I spent many hours (as world team manager) working (exactly like this) with come of the US team guy's during practice times in Italy.

Whatever happened to those things that beeped or blinked when you were exactly over the flag ? K&S used to sell them.

Good question - had heard about those...... My family is no longer enthused about watching me fly over flags...
