Obama to Ban Recreational Fishing?

Mark Whittington, Mar 9, 2010

The Obama administration is considering new environmental rules that would, in effect ban recreational fishing in the United States, according to ESPN. This move is apparently being contemplated under pressure from environmental groups.

"The Obama administration will accept no more public input for a federal strategy that could prohibit U.S. citizens from fishing the nation's oceans, coastal areas, Great Lakes, and even inland waters.

"This announcement comes at the time when the situation supposedly still is "fluid" and the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force still hasn't issued its final report on zoning uses of these waters.

"That's a disappointment, but not really a surprise for fishing industry insiders who have negotiated for months with officials at the Council on Environmental Quality and bureaucrats on the task force. These angling advocates have come to suspect that public input into the process was a charade from the beginning."

The excuse for this contemplated ban is the notion that recreational fishing as well as commercial fishing is depleting the stock of fish in American waters. This notion is disputed by fishing groups, which fear not only that a ban would prohibit Americans from pursuing a traditional form of recreation, but also devastate the industry that supports recreational fishing. Angling groups maintain that there is no basis in science for an attempt to ban recreational fishing.

If the ban is ordered, it would likely come via executive order rather than an attempt to have Congress pass legislation. Various environmental groups are demanding that such an executive order be issued as soon as possible.

The idea that any president would contemplate arbitrarily banning a sport that millions of Americans enjoy, from young boys dropping lines at the local fishing hole, to adults struggling with Marlins on the high seas, is just mind boggling. A potential ban on recreational fishing suggests that this administration is possessed by a myopic version of environmental ideology that transcends common sense. It also feels empowered to tell Americans what they can or cannot do at a whim.

If a ban on recreational fishing were to take hold, one would suspect that a ban on recreational hunting would not be far behind. Environmental groups have been trying to stop hunting for decades and now seem to have an administration willing to do their bidding.

There will almost certainly be a pushback against these plans. To paraphrase the president himself, Americans have traditionally clung to their fishing rods as much as they do their guns and their God. The writer Norman Mclean wrote a story, 'A River Runs Through It', that explored the spiritual aspects of fly fishing. The story was made into a film by Robert Redford.

Incidentally, one of the most famous anglers in the United States is a former vice president named Dick Cheney. So far Cheney has not commented on the proposed ban on recreational fishing. When he does, the effects should be interesting to behold.

My Comments: That oughta go over real well.

Snopes is quick to declare this is false. But as in many cases with snopes, if you go ahead and read their explantions you can ge a little insight to this. Here's just part of snopes:

Reading the above you get the feeling that this is only for commerical fishing and not for recreational fishing.

Wait, they used the word "primarily" aimed at the commerical fishing. Then that means recreational could be effected.

It is doubtful that fishing would be totally banned, but the feds could make it such a hassle, a person wouldn't want to go.

Snopes is quick to declare things false, but there is some meat on the bones here.

Let them ban fishing. It will only stir up more people to realize they need to support the Constitution to keep these tyrants at bay. For whatever time Obama has in office, I want him to do maximum damage to the republic and bring pain to the people. The pain will only wake up people and make them fight back and take our Government back under control of the Constitution.
Yeah, I know.

I have thought of that many, many times.

But, does America deserve that?

Well, yes, I suppose there are so many stupid people here, we deserve some serious pain to wake the dammed fools up.

The story is 2 years old. Looks like nothing happened. Just like how Obama was going to take away our gun rights.

Because that's the only thing that will wake people up...the ONLY thing. The problem with your list Inverted, is those are all the things us drooling, racist teabaggers like to do. The liberals don't like to get outside and get their hand dirty. Most liberals would be all for it. Along with:
BAN FOOTBALL (TOO VIOLENT)
BAN BOXING AND MMA (AGAIN, TOO VIOLENT)
BAN NASCAR (UNLESS THEY CONVERT TO CHEVY VOLTS OR PEDDLE CARS)
The list would be endless.

PsychoZ, you like guns? Do some research that Obama has considered using executive orders to control/restrict guns and ammo. Even Obama wants to enforce the UN gun control, but wants to wait until re-election. Obama is a perfect example of a control freak.
What has Obama done in the last 3.75 years to our gun rights? Not a damn thing. He did give those of us that have an LTC the right to carry in national forests. But besides that he has done nothing, even the Brady group gave him an "F" for what he has done for gun laws. Your one of those that thinks he is waiting to get re-elected before he goes after gun rights. Because that is what all presidents do, they wait til they get re-elected to go after what they really want to get rid of.

And the right was so worried about Obamacare that they wasted time voting 33 times to over turn Obamacare when they knew they didn't have enough votes. Maybe if the right worked with Obama we would be in better shape, but they fought him all the time. They did what they could so he would fail, and guess what, the right did what they hoped to do.

I fully believe Obama has been holding off because of the 2012 election.

The Democrats understand the power of the NRA and I believe the NRA is not in the full attack mode because they don't want to cause Obama to go full anti-gun...kinda like a cold war stand off.

But an Obama re election will put Obama at ease about doing any anti-gun stuff that he can get away with.

Thats because neither side did or should roll over just because their vote may not count. That is what we elect them to do.that is why barry got a "shellacking" in 2010.Remember?

And the left was so busy reading and studying every single page of the well over 2000 page ObummerCare bill, that they almost missed voting it into place and passing on to the prez for his signature to make it law.

Sure psycho, we understand.
