La. Gov. Bobby Jindal asks President Obama for more Tropical Storm Isaac aid

(CBS/AP) WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama declared a state of emergency in Louisiana on Monday as that state and others along the Gulf Coast prepared for Tropical Storm Isaac.

The White House said Obama informed Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal of the emergency declaration in a phone call. The declaration makes federal support available to save lives, protect public health and safety and preserve property in coastal areas.

Jindal, a Republican, shot back late Monday in a letter to the Obama administration that the declaration fell short of the help he was requesting.

"We appreciate your response to our request and your approval," Jindal wrote. "However, the state's original request for federal assistance ... included a request for reimbursement for all emergency protective measures. The federal declaration of emergency only provides for direct federal assistance."

Under law, the federal government can provide direct assistance at 75 percent of federal funding, with states responsible for 25 percent of costs, though there are exceptions for small, impoverished communities.

Jindal said the storm is forecast to strengthen to a Category 2 hurricane "and squarely impact the state of Louisiana."

Kind of like social security.

Great point. The problem is almost every state gets back more in Federal funding than they pay in federal taxes. The Red States are among some of the worst.

most state money that goes to the feds is in gas taxes. Most money that comes back to the states is in highway funds. Rural states like Wyoming etc, have no population to speak of to gnerate high tax levels, yet have massive amounts of open highway.

California's situation is largely caused by two things. First Prop 13 that destroyed the revenue flow to the state and our government by ballot initiative. California is a perfect example of what happens if you let the people who are motivated solely by their ideology and who are incapable of critical thought vote directly on new laws.

And I am not sure where you got that 617 billion number from (although I suspect it was from a place where the sun does not shine), but the current budget deficit is 16 billion. Still nothing to sneeze at, but significantly less than what you think it is.

As far as the Nation paying for our situation, your logic (as usual) escapes me. We get back less than we pay, shouldn't we at least get what we pay?? Or do you expect us not to get our share while other states (mostly Red ones) get back MORE than they pay?? Just who is supporting who??

Your take on Social Security is also incorrect. I personally know over a dozen people who are on Social Security, they have no problem getting their SS payments.

My wife and I are signed up and ready to go with Social Security, absolutely no problem. When we say so our payments will start.

Your take on Social Security is also incorrect. I personally know over a dozen people who are on Social Security, they have no problem getting their SS payments.

My take on SS is absolutely true! The workers of this country have paid trillions into SS and that money is long gone and is paid back to the investors and a fraction of what it should be and could have been if that money was invested privately!

A Ponzi scheme by any other name is called "social security".
