Is it best to practice autos in idle-up as opposed to normal because there's more negative pitch available in the idle-up flight modes?

I don't think it matters, you won't be using all the negative pitch in either mode. Just my .02 cents

I always have the exact same pitch curve in all modes so it wouldn't matter. Some beginners limit the negative pitch in normal mode so they don't accidentally slam it into the ground. If you are to the point of practicing auto's, you may want to make all pitch curves the same.

I think you should have the pitch the same as you fly with that way if you have a real engine out it will be closer to what you are use to.

If you are using a Spektrum radio it is very easy to adjust your "Hold" throttle curve to something in between hover and idle, this will give you the ability to hang at the bottom of your "Auto" for what will seem like an eternity. As far as pitch is concerned my IDLE 1, IDLE 2, and hold pitch curves are identical. I have a modified Normal mode to limit pitch, not to avoid slamming it into the ground but because I have no reason for -13 degrees of pitch while spooling up, or in the event I let someone else use my machine and they choose to land under power.

Set your hold pitch the same as your idle up. Practice you auto flight you want to do in idle up. Basically fly the heli in idle up and practice your flight line to the spot you want to auto. Just don't land. Once you feel comfortable give it a try.

I would set the idle a little fast in hold to help at first. Also you should be able to auto from about 10-20 feet hight before you attempt to auto from a higher hight.

If your radio has a true flight mode for hold (most of them nowadays) then you have a pitch curve for hold and it doens't matter what mode you are in when you hit the switch, hold will over ride it.

That said, in emergencies less switch flipping is better so its better to have identical pitch curves.
