Obama: The most polarizing president. Ever

by Chris Cillizza and Aaron Blake, 01/30/2012

President Obama ran — and won — in 2008 on the idea of uniting the country. But each of his first three years in office has marked historic highs in political polarization, with Democrats largely approving of him and Republicans deeply disapproving.

In 2010, the partisan gap between how Obama was viewed by Democrats versus Republicans stood at 68 percent; in 2009, it was 65 percent. Both were the highest marks ever for a president’s second and first years in office, respectively.

What do those numbers tell us? Put simply: that the country is hardening along more and more strict partisan lines.

While it’s easy to look at the numbers cited above and conclude that Obama has failed at his mission of bringing the country together, a deeper dig into the numbers in the Gallup poll suggests that the idea of erasing the partisan gap is simply impossible, as political polarization is rising rapidly.

Out of the ten most partisan years in terms of presidential job approval in Gallup data, seven — yes, seven — have come since 2004. Bush had a run between 2004 and 2007 in which the partisan disparity of his job approval was at 70 points or higher.

“Obama’s ratings have been consistently among the most polarized for a president in the last 60 years,” concludes Gallup’s Jeffrey Jones in a memo summing up the results. “That may not be a reflection on Obama himself as much as on the current political environment in the United States, because Obama’s immediate predecessor, Bush, had similarly polarized ratings, particularly in the latter stages of his presidency after the rally in support from the 9/11 terror attacks faded.”

Our guess is that Jones’ latter hypothesis is the right one — that we are simply living in an era in which Democrats dislike a Republican president (and Republicans dislike a Democratic one) even before the commander in chief has taken a single official action.

The realization of that hyper-partisan reality has been slow in coming for Obama. But in recent months, he seems to have turned a rhetorical corner — taking the fight to Republicans (and Republicans in Congress, particularly) and all but daring them to call his bluff.

Democrats will point out that Republicans in Congress have played a significant part in the polarization; the congressional GOP has stood resolutely against almost all of Obama’s top priorities. And Obama’s still-high popularity among the Democratic base also exacerbates the gap.

For believers in bipartisanship, the next nine months are going to be tough sledding, as the already-gaping partisan divide between the two parties will only grow as the 2012 election draws nearer. And, if the last decade of Gallup numbers are any indication, there’s little turnaround in sight.

You got it wrong guys, Obama is the Great Equalizer. All we are looking for is that the "Haves" pay their fair share.

No wars + fair taxes for all(Revenue)= Surplus. Remember the Clinton years? We ended up with a surplus. Two wars and tax cuts by the Bush regime, plus unregulated Wall Street and bingo..trillions in debt and deficit.

Our economic fate was sealed when we pushed for China to be admitted into the WTO (World Trade Organization), in year 2000. We kinda did it to our selves. We have payed dearly with unemployment and debt to a county that keeps their currency artificially deflated.

Please read and weep:

Also, please don't blame it on Liberal media and crap like that. Read the article for what it is. These people that write articles like that, spend a lot of time researching.

The "haves" DO pay MORE THEN their fair share and if you think otherwise you've only looked at half of the picture, the half the left wants you to see.

You want to talk about fair!!!! Tell me how its fair I have to work all day, pay my share of taxes so the bum down the street doesn't have to get out of bed today, how is that fair?

The "Haves" are only about 10%. But, they are already paying 70% of all federal taxes. How much more do you want them to pay before you run them out of the USA.

With that kind of attitude towards success, why should anyone wish to invest in the USA?

Yeah, I remember the Clinton years. Clinton lost his dem majority in the house and senate for the first time in over 40 years.

Then, came Gingrich and the 10 point contract with America which got control of the welfare society and saved the country billions upon billions and put over 11 million people back to work, and with those added revenues, knocked the deficit down big time. Of course, Clinton, by his own admission, took credit for all of that.

In addition, Osama Bin Laden was handed to Clinton on a silver platter. Clinton turned that down and let him go. Then, of course, Osama planned and executed 9/11.

Clinton was also disbarred from practicing law is his own state for lying to a grand jury. Most people forget that that was a felony. The first president in US history to be convicted of a felony.

Nice job Clinton.

Convenient for the left to leave out the facts ain't it?

How much value is "Researching" when its results totally slanted to the left? The NY Times is simply another lefty rag.

Not all unemployed are bums PBush. Our economic woes started the minute China came into the game.

Right now we are faced with chronic unemployment, because the jobs that have been lost are not coming back. During the "Lost Decade" American companies reduced the work force, domestically, by 4.2 million and the same companies created 4.7 million jobs overseas. Tell me how's that fair. That was not done because of taxation either. It was done because China doesn't care or impose humane working conditions for the workers, their salaries are ridiculously low and all that makes for very cheap production of goods.

Please read this damaging article about our favorite American company Apple. You'll see what I mean and that's just an example.

Well if you don't read both sides and only listen to FOX then you cannot call yourself "well rounded".

NYT is an institution for this country and has unearthed a lot of stories. It is extremely well written and a joy to read on Sunday morning with a cup of coffee. You have to challenge your mind Dennis, don't just listen to what demagogues like Sean Hannity have to say. They are the Polarizing people, guided by the ole' mighty Rupert Murdoch.

You had already predicted that.
