Someone said it already,
we pay so much because its what the market will bare.
the solution is simple just don't bare it anymore

I think Kino has hit the nail on the head we can not bare it anymore so we are going else where to get our gear. It makes sense when you can save 50% and get the same service. I live on a Island I have to get all my gear by post anyway.

I have a buddy who works for one of the importers/distributors, believe you me, he is getting crap pay considering his job.

His last job was in the IT industry, he was responsible for the Company Network in all its entirety ( anitvirus, firewalls, locating and dealing with Hackers, etc etc ) and when the company went to the wall last year he took a job with this importer/distributor. He dropped 26K in salary !!!
No opportunity of overtime, as the company wont do allow it. Their markup isnt a great deal, so they have to rely on Volume Of Sale ( VOS ).

They cannot open a online webstore neither are they allowed to sell direct to the customer. They made an agreement with the main LHS's. Plus (unlike their main competitor ) they do not own any stores !!!

If they could rely on VOS ( like in the USA ), then they could afford to drop the price to the LHS's. But as the UK is a much smaller market than the US, they cant afford to. Plus, as the VOS is smaller, they don't get the same discounts from the manufacturer !

I have even heard that one manufacturer in the Far East have told them that as they don't order enough in the year, they wont be getting any discount whatsoever. Obviously this means for them to supply within the UK, its going to cost more.

Oh well..... such is life... ebay does some good second hand kit !

http://www.komplett.ie are pretty good not sure if they compare to cyberheli but I haven't found any better on-line unless you want to brave ebay.
If there is a cyberheli equivalent for electronics please pass it on.

Thanks Kino - I thought they just did PC bits, I'll have a look now.

There are a few US sites with very good deals but will I have trouble with the NTSC vs PAL thing? They not only drive on the wrong side of the road but their power and TV is different

Your mostly right they seem to just have one DV camcorder. Sorry I thought they sold all that stuff.
I wonder why they don't sell camcorders

Kc2huv,
Many of us are now making a stand by purchasing our goods from
outside the U.K. Personally, last year I spent probably at least 80%
of my model budget outside the U.K.
I purchased a Quick 60 from HHI and saved about £150 ($280)over the
U.K. price. With the Dollar now even weaker against the Pound the
saving would be even greater.
At the weekend I visited my local shop and was offered a 80-90 muscle pipe 2 for £90 ($170).On Youngbloods site the suggested street price is $110 (£59).Also I looked in the latest heli-mag and found that the Century Predator 90 Max is £700 ($1316) in the U.K. In the U.S.A it is $730 (£388).So I could order one from the States and even with VAT + Shipping + Handling costs, it would cost about £510 ($960 )saving £190 ($360).I even recently purchased a rev counter from Tower
Hobbies and saved about 25% on the U.K. price , so it isn't just the large items that are worth getting outside the U.K.

Sadly I believe that Scouse is correct.Incidently, I heard that the crime rate in Liverpool has fallen dramatically, due to everything already having been stolen.Perhaps you would care to further enlighten me,Scouse!

Basically, anything over £100 ($185) and I order from abroad. I'd like to support the lhs, but quite honestly, I can't afford to.
Even with shipping, handing fees, vat and any other tax they can think up to add on, its still cheaper than buying at home.
It won't be too long before a lot of the smaller model shops disappear altogether, not victim to cheaper overseas prices necessarily, more like victim to excessive prices charged by uk distributers.
Someone is getting rich on the back of UK modellers

Skycom, I hate to say this but you cant blame the distributors all the time........ I think you'll find that the LHS get a larger slice than the Disties...

You could try moving ?

Kidding, used to live in the UK and know how expensive every thing is. I still come back quite a bit and cant believe how much extra you pay and how late new stuff comes out. I just picked up a JR9x here with carry case and 4 servos for 306 quid
The problem is that if you all stop buying from your local hobby shop many will go out of business. If that happens were will you go for all the urgent cant fly this weekend if I dont get it parts ? Who will sponsor the local events and competitions ? Where will you all go when its raining ?Its not the local shops that are cleaning up its most probably the importer or just too many people in the supply chain.
Its not all as cheep as it sounds buying from overseas, my radio isnt a legal uk frequency and has a Japanese manual
