I am a sport flier Looking to run a low head speed of about 1850 to a high head speed of about 2100. I would be running 12s, cc or hw esc and 710 blades. What KV motor would you recommend. I am looking at the X-Era 470kv and the 480 Kv. Also looked at the Scorpion 450 Kv and the 500Kv. Thanks Leon

The Scorpion 4035-530 is ideal for that setup (and has been tested quite a bit). One other alternative is the LE Scorpion 4025-520, crazy power.
I wouldn't go lower than 500kv, and you may have to go to the 13T pinion for that kv or lower.

I'm running the Kontronics Pyro 700 450KV swinging 690's about 2140 @85% throttle with a jive 120 on 12s. swinging 710's would be right where you want to be with this setup AWESOME Power with this setup too !

I AGREE AND SO DO I

the kde motor is in a different class than the pyro imop. You still get good power with the pyro and stump pulling power with the kde. I would rather fly the pyro though as the kde weighs a ton.

you won't notice the weight once it spools up but it is a little on the heavy side on the bench. i have run both in the whiplash.

The scorpion HKIII4035-500kv would be perfect for what you're after. If you're only sport flying I'd be willing to bet you'll stay more in the 1950-2000rpm range. 2100rpm on 710's will a wee bit of an eye opener

I am having very good luck with the Align MX 510KV motor. My objective was to get good duration with power on par with my 90's. I am running my Whippy at 1900 with stock grearing and 710's. With this combination and flying full out 3D I am getting 7 minutes (5000mah packs). I received a lot of positive comments at the OHB on this setup.

Agreed, I've ran both the 500kv Scorpion and the 510kv 700mx in mine with great results.

What about a 4035-560? What pinion would be good for this motor?

Absolutely agree ^^^
The The scorpion HKIII4035-500kv will give you a great balance of good power and longer flights.
If you want a little more endurance and run about 1900-2000 the Xera 4030/3y-470 will give you that.

Xera 4035 2.5Y 480KV is what I'd choose between those two, 14T pinion on the Whiplash.

The optional 13 tooth pinion would be what you want to use with this kv.

He said he might want to run 1850 HS. 560KV on 12S is too high of gearing(9.538:1) for that low HS. It could easiliy over heat the ESC. 2100HS would be OK though. Or 10S at 1850 HS.

I agree. 560kv should only be used if you're going to run higher headspeeds 2000rpm and up.

boomstrike5 is looking at the right motors ^^^ for the RPM he mentioned.
I run the scorpion HKII 4035-500 (the newer HK III is better) on my competition machine and I manage 9-10min flights on the Expert schedule, with enough power to do 92mph on the straights and 400ft loops if I want to.

A collegue uses the smaller X-Era 470kv and has about the same power but it is more efficient.

The 4035-560, would have to be geared so high you would be WASTING power/batteries.

That's what makes the 4035-530 (or the LE 520 if you can afford it) a great all around choice.

That's what I love about the E's...soooo many choices! But, the problem is we need to do a little finding out about those choices. Motor KV, batt voltage, gearing, and desired head speed, all have to be taken together as a whole to make sure the power system doesn't "back load" the ESC too far and heat it up unnecessarily, but also has enough headroom so the gov can keep the head speed constant throughout the flight. In general what you want is to match all the above parameters so your system is as efficient as possible. You can use a lower KV motor with bigger pinions(lots of options) or a higher KV motor with smaller pinions(not very many options). The Whiplash is not made for lower HS as the smallest pinion is a 13T(9.538 GR). If you want low HS on it you have to use a low KV motor, there simply is no other way to get an eff. system. If you can find a NEU(most eff. motors on the market) 1915 1.5Y 450KV, that would be a very good option and my first choice. My second choice is still the Xera 4035-480KV.
