Why can't professionals be more like Jimmy Hendrix? Remember how Hendrix played an old Fender Stratocaster? It's not like he started out playing Gibson guitars, and then when he became famous and Fender offered him a deal, he started playing the Stratocaster. No, he decided early on in his career what product he BELIEVED IN, and he played it. Then when he became famous that company began to sponsor him.
Justin, I didn't know you were old enough to know who Jimmy was?

But you are right.

Thanks, TheWoodCrafter

I think a lot of people put too much stock in what people think is a good heli or manufacturer based solely on who is flying for them.
My sentiments exactly.

I agree, if ones smart enough to totally ignore advertising, yet the masses dont...... therefore I accept their burden, and dare to argue that a sponsored pro should accept the responsibility of their company, and customers.

My selection depends on parts availability, price, and what others have said about ease of assy and performance. And most importantly, support.
One of the reasons I usually buy mine from Min Air.

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

I posted about this very topic last year, mainly to have some discussion, not really a rant. I was ridiculed by a few who thought it was silly to make a post about something "I didn't care about". They were probably right. I sure enjoy watching and learning things from the pros, but can't say whom they fly for is relevant. I thought Bobby Watts brought some value to the Min Air product line by being one who advises them on design attributes, but can't say I know enough to draw a good conclusion. There's marketing behind much of it, and it's constantly changing around us. Some companies seem to shift their strategy towards markets other than my own, and as a result, products don't come my way. It's the reason I never wound up buying a Fusion 50. They didn't pursue it when I was ready. Instead, they signed Tareq and Lukas and invested in the V90 full force. That's an example of how this ends up affecting me. Combined with timing, the marketing aspect seems significant in this hobby IMO.

I personally make it a point NOT to buy products which have celebrity endorsements associated with them. I want to be unique, and not just a fanboy of some famous person. I would never be caught wearing Air Jordans or a Tag Heuer watch, even if I had the money for it.

Celebrity endorsements are a real turn-off.

What I think the role of the sponsored pilots should be is to be the primary contact person for the company. In other words, they should be there to answer questions and to offer help in setup or repair.

When I see those videos of Alan Szabo Jr or Tareq Alsaadi flying the crap out of one of their helicopters, I click to the next page. I don't even watch it. I don't really care. But when someone like cgbole tells me how to assemble a Synergy helicopter or Carey Shurley gives me some insight into a MinAir helicopter, I appreciate that and listen up. So these are the kinds of "celebrity endorsements" which make me more interested in a particular brand or model. Not the famous guy flying fast.

I don't exactly judge a particular model by who's flying it but I do judge the quality of the company...and the quality of the team they put together...and the investment they make toward the hobby. It makes for a lot of great fun.

Justin, I didn't know you were old enough to know who Jimmy was?

But you are right.
Well Leo Fender just got it right with his original instruments, that's what really made Fender.

But I agree it's the same thing with endorsements, etc. In fact, I sometimes buck the trends - i.e. I actually strongly dislike Fender basses and don't play them, even tho they're the most famous designs in the world. Tho ironically, my favorite bass is my G&L L2000 fretless (LF's best stuff was G&L, IMO). A Leo Fender design significantly better than the original Fenders but not very popular and don't resell for more than a couple beans. Yet I love mine.

I also don't care what the pros fly, unless they do like Bobby Watts and make detailed videos of the equipment they build and fly. Then you can actually see what makes it great. That's why if I were rich my next heli would probably be a whiplash...

so would you guys agree, that probobly the most reliable opinions would come from folks who have no affiliations at all, and fly extremely well, paying their own way?
