Hello everyone I'm brand new to this RC sport and have purchased the Blade SR as my first Heli. Have had it for 3 weeks now and have not got it into the air yet. Question is how long do I fly simulator before powering up real Heli? I'm on the sim every night and can some what hover but not holding completely. Is there some moves I should try and master before throdleup? I have been to the field here in Huntsvill but never see anyone to ask questions there or to just watch. Must be the Holidays? Thanks for your help in advance.

The first and most important thing to learn to do, be it on the sim or on a starter heli is to hover in all orientations.

The biggest mistake I see people at the field do is learn to get the heli in a semi stable hover then the next thing they learn to do is fly around. If you learn to fly before you learn to hover (and trust me flying is for the most part easier than hovering) you will become bored and never learn all your orientations.

Next thing you know the heli comes out of a loop funny or rolls weird and pow you have piled it in. The blade series is a little different because you are not going to be looping and rolling but I say learn the basics before attempting to FLY.

If you can hover in all orientations you will rarely have a crash.

Orientation flight

Thanks for that info, I have turned in all directions and it is harder to think backwards for roll. Should I always keep trimming with slides for roll or should I just keep right stick with a little yaw and pitch?

With the small helicopters its a tricky question. A little bit of elevator or aileron is not that big of a deal because such little weight can throw the CG off from one flight to the next.

On a larger helicopter you ultimately want everything mechanically trimmed. This would mean adjusting the links and or servo horns to be at the correct angles.

On a side note, you should not have an extreme angle on the swash plate in order to keep the heli stable. It should almost appear perfectly level to the naked eye, maybe a degree or two off.

Wow

With all that info you just stated I have a lot of learning to do. Are there books to read or should I just read the book that came with my Heli a few times? I can see sitting down with someone and doing the show and tell thing with me. I was hoping or just thinking that the right stick could be left zeroed and the craft should stay in place except for wind variations, is that the case or should you always keep right stick moving to keep stable?

Welcome to a sport that may get you addicted! The Blade you have now is just the tip of the iceberg, if you stick with it!
Spend as much time as you can on the sim until you are comfortable.

I'm on the sim now doing what Chanceyman stated but it's hard to hold steady. I do better keeping some trim pitch forward and I then keep a slight hold back to keep pressure on my rigt stick. Is it better to always keep steady trim on one so as to "keep a feel" on the craft?

Thanks Pistol Pete, I started reading at that site and got to the part that said the Blade SR is not a good Heli. Wow that was depressing!! I have got to go with what I have unroll it meets it's fait. Will keep reading and hope to find someone near by to "walk the talk". Thanks again everyone, it sure brings up the strees level a notch when talking with the group here to try and understand the lingo.

Take that comment as its not the best heli to "start" with.

Most likely meant as not one you can grow with but any heli is better than none in my book. We all have helis collecting dust on a shelf as we all had to start somewhere.

When you do start to fly the SR, the tail is wickedly wild. There are several videos on YouTube that confirm the wag. Another piece of foam (gyro tape) will help tame her.

First flight

I had my first flight yesterday, got up to 2" but did not crash. The tail is stil an issue. When I go to spool up the rotor is at at speed and kicks tail to right before I power down. The only way to power up to start lift I must hold ruter stick hard left and the spool up. At half power before lift I can ease ruter back right to start to lift. What a mess this is. I did the gyro test tonight as in unplug main rotor then power up and after gyro is ready. I then turn tail to to and the rotor should kick in but itoy does it every now and then. When it does kick in its wide open throtle. Not sure what to do next?

Go to YouTube, type in "blade SR fix that annoying tail." This video will assist in calming that tail down by 80%. Are you using the stock radio?

I just the video but the only issue is that I have not seen the tail wag yet. The issue is when I spool up I can not have the left stick in the middle left to right or the tail will go like a bat out of hell and throws tail to right. The only way I can correct is on power up I hold the rudder hard left and the main blade starts turning and when I get torqu up I can then ease rudder stick back right ( center) to continue lift. When I did the gyro test last night on the table from the book it did not respond correct also. I unplugged main rotor, powered up with stick at half trodel and then twisted nose to left (tail right) to see if rudder motor kicks in. Well it did not, only kicks in when I pick the heli up and spin in a circle. Not sure what's going on with this this.

Sounds like you might have a faulty direct drive tail motor. The tail motor is a brushed motor. Since it has to be small, they are prone to failure due to overheating.

After your flight, is the tail motor hot?

So before you even take off, your already putting inputs (left) to try to keep it stable?

Still sounds to me like a gain issue. The "tail fix" video talks about that around the 5 min mark. Channel 5 dial is for such.

As long as the tail is holding in flight, I would not worry about a small kick during spool up as there is not enought rotor speed to compensate for such. All you can do is spool her up slower. This is pretty much a common issue among small helis.
