An A&P is only a foot in the door, so to speak and it is expensive to get there. HOWEVER there is a little known and even less used method and that can be found in 14CFR part 65.77 What that means is you can take a minimun wage spot at a flight school or maint shop and in 18 months you can go for either a powerplant or airframe rating or in 30 months you can take both of the written tests and if you pass them you go in front of an examiner for a practical test. Passing that you are a new A&P with no student dept.

I cannot speak for the lower 48 but doing an apprenticeship will earn you a lot more "street cred" than coming out of an A&P school. For larger companies and such an A&P is an A&P regardless of whether you acquired it through the military, apprenticeship, or up to your neck in student debt.

As far as tools go yes you will have to acquire them as you go but a basic set will not be too much and keep buying a few here and there and they add up. I would guess I have about 30K tied up in mine but that has been over a few years.

Find a job that you love to do, and you will never WORK a day in your life.

Unlike some people's definition, the $$$ you make per month is not the measure of your success.
If you love the idea of working on complex machinery and you find satisfaction in getting your hands "dirty", then you are already 90% of the way there. The rest is "details".

Good luck.

Do you not need to do an apprenticeship after going to A&P school? Up here in the great white north (actually south of you lol) you need to do two years of college then a 36 month apprenticeship before you can write the exams for an AME license.... and then you need individual type endorsements to actually be able to release an aircraft.

Canada has an completely different set of requirements. Once you graduate A&P school you are free and clear to work on any airplane from a cessna 120 all the way up to the dreamliner.

There is a catch however, as an A&P you are NOT allowed to perform annual inspections (part 91 or 135) or any major repairs or alterations. To do those you need an Inspection Authorization, IA for short. Those are quite the challenge to get and have a shockingly high failure rate. Took me three tries.

Billingsnutz, you should also look at Eurocopter here in Mississippi. Great benefits, B techs start at 17.80, A techs 19.80 and senior techs 23-25 per hour. Cost of living is nice as well. Plus you can go to school on EADS dime! I'm in AS-350 production and love it!

he's been told 100 times. The AF will not hire you if you've ever even been arrested, regardless if you were found guilty. He's got a felony on his record. Even if he had it expounged (sp), they still won't take him. The only branch that MIGHT, is the Army. And probably not because it was a felony.

I doubt the Army will either. I worth around Army aviation right now and there are tons of applicants.

I give up on Loctite, nothing lasts long enough to vibrate loose anymore.
