Probly want the gift only so he doesn't get charged the 3% fee. With all of the scams going on this time of year, I would do everything to cover my butt. Talk with the seller about it, if he is as concerned about loosing $17 in paypal fees as you are of getting scammed, maybe the 2 of you could reach some kind of middle ground. I know I wouldn't send it as a gift, then you are out of your money if he stiffs you.

The world is yours!

also sending as a gift is pointless now anyway as they still charge the fees.

+1 They charge fees now for "gifts" I belive though if paying from a paypal balance there are still no fees and there is a selection for you or the receiver to pay the fees when sending as anything under the "Personal" menu.

Oh and gift doesn't send your adress to the seller so if you send as gift and he doesn't ask for your adress but claims the item was shipped then I would be worried.

Anyone who sells a high dollar item such as a heli , and request that the buyer pays as "gift" thru paypal is a red flag in my book. Should you send money as gift, you then are not protected from a scam should the seller decide not to send the item. The money was sent as a "gift"
Dont do it! ask the buyer what the paypal fees are and come to an agreement on the price, should he/she baulk at this, then chalk it up to you not becoming a fraud victim.

If it's from balance or checking account theydon't charge me for gifts

But I also spend over $5000 through my paypal account a year which entitles you to some perks.

Asking the buyer to pay fees is BS. Also against PP policy.

If your that interested in the bird make an offer with the $15.75 added on for fees (or whatever number you want) and payment via the normal paypal way. If this does not suit the person, walk away. Anytime I come across an item and the seller wants to go this route I follow that logic. Here is my offer, paypal the correct way, or see ya later.

Offer to pay the fee and then its a deal. There is no reason then the seller would not accept and if they do forget about it because somethings not right.

I used to ask that they send payment as a gift simply to avoid fees.
That was early when I wasn't aware of the many scammers out there.

I no longer ask that and actually don't deal with people who do.

Sometimes,it may be the same as I was and they just don't understand how it works yet and sometimes it will be a scam.
Unfortunately, there's no way to tell the difference until you get scammed.

Don't do it.

The only time I ask for the money as a gift is when someone asks me to ship to a different address other than the one provided by Paypal. Since PP will not cover me if I do that I figure we both should be "trusting" right? That usually results in a non sale which is what I wanted in the first place

Hello peeps...

Just want to say thanks for the eye opener... I would normally ask for paypal as Gift when selling an item under $5... Due to shipping taking most of it .
I knew some of you did not like dealing with Adds the asked for PP as Gift, just didn't know 99% of you felt like that.... Though, it is Understandable due to all the Scams...

So I just went and Edited my Clasifieds....hehe

On a side note.... and Not to High Jack the OPs Thread, how about when the buyer doesn't have PP ?

I've Sold items To a few RR peeps on Trust and so Far most have been Loyal to Their Word and send payment thru Snail Mail.

Payment through any means is fine.
Just don't ship anything until you have the money(cash)in your hands.

If they send a check or money order...it has to clear before you ship anything.

Surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet, but asking the buyer to pay fees (i.e. calling a 'gift' when it's really a purchase) is a violation of PayPal Terms of Service, in addition to being just a bad idea, as fully covered above.

Do not purchase from people who try this, plain and simple.

Here's a novel idea: in your asking price for an item, factor in shipping and PayPal fees. So if you want to sell a gyro for $45 you know PP will take $1.57 and the Post Office will want $5 to ship to the lower 48 states.

I think buyers appreciate this type of transaction.
