Relax, it's a former Soviet carrier called the Varyag. It was never fully completed, tranfered to Ukrainian ownership, was stripped, and had been just floating in port in the Ukrain until around 1998. It was originally sold to a Chinese company that wanted to turn it into a floating hotel and casino for about $20 million dollars. When that fell through the Chinese government picked it up.

It's capabilities are not even close to that of our super carriers. This thing sold for less than one of the aircraft onboard one of our carriers.

But still, it's a carrier, even if it's a ski-jump carrier. It can be used for what carriers are really useful for...projecting power.

This is the one they'll use to shake out their concepts of carrier technology, their learning curve. Once they do that, then they can fast track building more, and better carriers.

The Taliban are short of a few carriers and aircraft as well, still not beat yet.Never underestimate your enemies as fools. You have aleady lost if you do.China has done pretty well without bullets after the stale mate in Korea many years ago.China on its own is formidable, let alone with its ally,Russia. These are the big boys with some real competition ,not Iran.In a conventional conflict, some tough cookies.Nukes are out, because all sides have them.Someone took their eyes off the ball stomping on ants in the schoolyards of Iraq and Afghanistan and soon to be Iran when the troops are"Rested".Asia needs our attention.

I could be wrong. But, it's difficult for me to imagine China as much of a military threat to us for a very, very long time.

We are still their largest trading partner by billions upon billion of dollars. Because of that, why would they wish to make that go away? Even to make any kind of attack on our economy would certainly not be in their own economies best interests.

Heck, right now they are better capitalist than we are.

Comments are welcome.

Like i said, the Chinese used their heads,no bullets, why would they want war? They have everything on a gold platter already. With our blessing Till that changes,i would be content too.Ordinary folks will wake up one day and see what this cheap production will mean for all of us.We have taken the drugs,it is now our problem.Just a thought, if it did happen, hope the Chinese dont fight like the Japanese or Vietnamese, just been watching HBO,s"Pacific",them Marines had balls.

I still say we (meaning Obama) need to quit p*$%ing off Russia and hook up with them as an ally. Us together would ensure our abilities to keep the Chicomms in check. We're missing a golden opportunity. We were almost there w/ Bush 2 and then it all of a sudden went to hell. Now we've got Russia rattling their sabres again.

The best thing we can do for Russia is to leave them alone.

Same with China.

But, keep plenty of HUMINT there anyway. Plenty. In fact, more than deemed necessary. Infiltrate everything. Thats what they are doing with us. Both of them. Among others.

HUMINT = Human Intelligence.

If you don't know what that means, then you ain't wise to the world.

I'd trust the russian way before I'd trust the Chinese. We have a common interest afterall. The Chinese are a way bigger threat to them than they are to us. China needs oil, lots of it. And for them, the Russian oil fields are on the same continent over a common border.

China would be better off supporting Russia in exploiting Russia's own oil reserves and then seeing what they can do for themselves in that respect. The better Russia does, the better China does.

With the Chinese being better at being Capitalists than we are now, the Chinese would much better not going to war with anyone (unless attacked and only to defend themselves) and only working towards a better economy in a competitive world.

Well, at least we should all hope so.

es1co2bar3, that statement is just plain-out FALSE. As stated above, that carrier is an extremely old Soviet vessel. It is likely 10 years from launching aircraft (of which they have none for Naval purposes from what I understand).
Their blue-water navy is non-existent (this means that they don't have one).

The "stealth" plane that they displayed earlier this summer was highly criticized. No one really knows if their claims are true; Most everything that I've read about it is a non-story.

You're freaking out over a country of reverse-engineers, with a dilapidated (that means worn-out) piece of obsolete (that means worthless) military hardware.

Alright, I'm through feeding the troll.
