I am about to buy a new tail servo for my 50 size heli. I'm torn between the Futaba 9254 or Align 620. I'm most concered with life expentency and/or value, any input on this choice will be appreciated.

If you want long life go with a Futaba brushless like a BLS 251 great servo. Youll probably get a little longer life out of the Futaba in general

I have heard many complaints about the 620 on the tail... this is why they came out the 650 however the 610 rocks! for swashplate.
I would get Hyperion/Savox servos if you cannot afford any Futaba BLS

I have hundreds of flights on align DS650. Solid gear train, powerful and fast.

Youre probably not going to get a straight answer just opinions.

I able to turn the gain up higher on my vbar with a Futaba bls 251 than I am on the Align 650, therefore better performance. The align performs great, but not as good as the Futaba. Can't beat the price on the align electronics though.

I like the DS650. I think it is better than the DS620. I haven't had one fail and I run them on 6 Volts. They are cheap.

i recently put a jr8717hv on my 700 with an 800mm boom and my god, its the best tail servo ever made. Lightning fast and stupid amount of torque.

i like puppies, no wait. kittens.

oh, sorry i thought we were just blurting out random stuff.

between the two servos you asked about, i'd say the 9254 is the better servo. the futaba is only rated to 4.8v, but still faster than the 620 at 6v.

hard to compare torque figures since align quotes stall torque. but, the 9254 is the servo that came with the 401. and, i've seen them on many 90s over the years. so, the definitely can hang with the big boys.

as others have mentioned, if the 620 was so good, why did they release the 650 so quickly? that's not a statement. just an observation. i've never actually flown a 620 for an extended time to gauge its life expectancy.

if it ain't broke, break it.

the 610, 620, and 650 were all released at the same time - when the LE helis was introduced. the 610 was included in kits and has developed quite a following. the 650s were also included in kits as tail servos. the 620 has a 610 chassis and different gearing. it is a cyclic servo that can be used on the tail. to save $ Align put in the 620 in 550 kits as a tail servo, where it is adequate. some folks who have swapped out their 620s for 650 claim an improvement, which is plausible given that the 650 probably has much tighter deadband. If you are buying a servo OTC look at the 650.

I would go with the Futaba Bls 251. But between the 2 you listed, I would choose the Futaba! I had a Trex that came with the align 620 tail servo, Brand new kit, had a wag right out of the box, put the 9254 on it and the wag was gone!

I too had a wag on my Trex 700E that I could not get rid of. 251 solved that problem.

Keep in mind, the 251 only works on short pulse devices.

It would be helpful to know which gyro before making a recomendation.

The Align 610, 620, 650's are made by Savox.

I have Align DS610's in my Trex 700N with 305 flights...I'v had no problems with them.

Also using Savox servo's with 72 lights on them...no issues.

The 620 was a high speed, high torque servo repurposed as a tail servo. Kind of like using a 8717 or high end Hitec.
It is fast, but with the high torque gears and motor it takes some time and energy to get it moving and same with stopping.
So a servo with 150oz of torque and .06 versus 50oz and .06. The Align DS650 is a dedicated tail servo with correct motor and gears for that application.
I have run the DS620 as a tail servo, but it is nowhere as good as a 650.

Have not flown the newer Futaba servos. I know their brushless line is very good.

Stay away from using the 620 for tail use!

As many noted, the 620 has good torque and speed, but the electronics are not robust enough to take the duty cycle of true tail servo which has to change directions very rapidly all the time, and torque is a lesser requirement.
The 620 just can't keep up with the demands of a tail gyro.

The Savox SH-1290MG (Align 650) are good bargain and purposed tail servos. I would no longer spend money on a Futaba 9254, but rather get the cream of the crop: Futaba BLS251 or for HV, BLS256.

Thread should be moved to Servo section!
