So I'm reading all this stuff about FBL... Sits rock solid in the wind... Roll's are straight and easier... Etc...

Is it cheating and almost like flying with an auto pilot or is it evolution, just like we went from no (tail) gyro to gyro to heading hold gyro?

Cheers

NO, it's not cheating. You're still flying the heli, and you're still the one responsible for making the maneuvers look good.

So now, let's get out the popcorn and see how long it takes this thread to deteriorate...

"Cheating" -- NO!
It's basically using the latest and greatest electronics that are available in today's market to allow the pilot to have a more "locked in" feel, this will you to make more forward progression in your personal flying skills.

You gotta fly one set to your flying style to truly appreciate it!

Personal opinion only!

Evolution is what it is!

This kind of comment comes up far too often, it's a joke really. NO it is not cheating in fact often it "shows" your mistakes. It took some time before I could piroflip decent on FBL, as a flybar allows you to float into the maneuver, while FBL needs the input and holds the input till you change it, so it will look not as nice until YOU do it properly. Advantages in wind yea, you dont need to fight the wind, advantage to not get blade tip up in FFF, who cares I want that anyhow. Stable in hover absolutely, but setup a flybar one proper with some according paddles and setup so will it. The advantages of FBL outweigh the negatives and it is the future period!

Very much so. Take a vbar and put it in a plane. You can now do endless knife edge passes, hovering and torque rolls are easy as pie. The bottom line is FBL takes less skill and allows you to do more moves that maybe you couldn't correct your way though with out it. Cheating, yup, but I would never go back.

It feels like cheating because it makes me have a lot more fun flying rather than tinkering all day to find that tiny bad bearing in the flybar something-or-other. (which will inevitably be discovered on sat afternoon and also on backorder
And as I see it, chances are about the same that part of that flybar setup that you forgot to loctite will fly off and cause a crash as the electronics in a FBL gyro will bug out and do the same. Maybe even greater.

Death to the flybar!

Yes. FBL is cheating

Just like an F15 in a dogfight with a Sopwith Camel is cheating.

I think that fbl helps , but if you don't have the manouvers...fbl won't make them by itself.

Cheating on what?
The easier our toys are to fly, the better. It's supposed to be fun after all, doesn't it?

I believe there certain aspect of a FB that a FBl cannot replace.
It took some time before I could piroflip decent on FBL, as a flybar allows you to float into the maneuver, while FBL needs the input and holds the input till you change it, so it will look not as nice until YOU do it properly.
The direct link to swashplate that a FBL has, makes it hard for any FBL system to get a relaxer fix on the blades. The indirect connection on a FB head makes all the difference. The linkages on a FB head provide resolution that is hard to match by many if not all FBL systems. Yes there are servos with almost step less resolution, but the rapid rate changes of the helicopter causes the servo to work overtime, trying to maintain stability and maneuverability, while a FB has the paddles and linkages to handle half the job of keeping the heli in the air. Is it cheating? in a way yes, because it offers help keeping the helicopter stable by correcting overshoots and drifts by FB heads and poorly setup FB helis.

Funguy fully understand all the dynamics and reasoning of "why" point is fbl does not perform a maneuver for you and often clearly shows your mistakes on timing where as a FB does not.

Completely different, a flybarred heli can do everything a FBL heli can but a heli without a tail gyro cannot do what a heli with a tail gyro can.

If I am forced to go FBL I will quit the hobby.

60% of the time, it works every time!
