Good ol' Shuttle ZX in '93. Might have been a ZXX. I put that thing through hell and back. Tough bird.

wow I have mad respect for some of you guys.you learned on machines with suspect designs and mechanical gyros.I also notice the guys in the hobby long term seem to have started on a 30or 50 nitro(all that was available then)and now for some reason the elec 450 is the go to trainer.I dont know if everyone appreciates the modern ball link,120 ccpm(direct) and HH gyros

oh and I atleast paid a LITTLE bit of dues...Blade CP

Don't worry, it didn't help us at all . If you saw me fly today, you'd agree .

The .30 size was not too bad, but it was really underpowered with the .32 engines that were available at the time (I ran the O.S. .32 in my shuttle). The carbys were also absolutely terrible; they only worked right at full power. Idle and hover were a constant battle to keep the engine running.

Modern .91, OTOH, are heaven in comparison. They idle great and run great. No more running out to the flight line as fast as possible so you can get into the air before the engine dies from being too lean or too rich at idle.....

My first Heli was a Star 20, but was never able to fly it,all it will do was jump all over the place until I brake it.
the first heli I was able to fly was a Baron 20 with a OS 25 airplane engine in it, no gyro, so was never able to get it in a good hovering, but it could fly around like a plane more or less and every landing was a set of new blade ;-)
oh, that was 1982.

I started out on a tubby little JR Ergo 30, with piezo (non HH) gyro. It was called a "Tele-Bee" or something similar. The Ergo was a heavy heli for a 30 size, but tough as hell, and far superior to anything else in the 30 range until the Raptor came out and blew everyone away.

I crashed that bird numerous times and rebuilt it back to airworthyness, all the while dumping money in "upgrades" into it.

Eventually built another Ergo as a 50 festooned with upgrades that fly quite nicely.

Those Ergos were a pretty solid design!

Robbe Futura w/ JR 10SX and CSM 360 gyro. Still one of the best flying machines!

I still have that machine and plan on bringing it back to flying condition. The original wood blades for learning to hover are still intact! I still can't believe I went one and a half years with that machine without crashing!

Kyosho Concept 30 SR with a Airtronics Vanguard Radio and Airtronics SG-X mechanical gyro. I loved hearing that gyro spool up. Those were the days indeed.
