3D = geared for left side
FAI = geared for right side

if anything is different between them its the shaft because the output gear mounts on the opposite side of the case.

as long as you get the bellcrank mount, you can use the high end FAI pitch slider on either one

Do a search. There was an issue with the open tail box and the spectra that's why it uses the closed tail box. The newer style on the whip could be an option.

The FAI tail case pitch slider is almost all metal with the double arm. It's supposed to be on the right side, and it's also supposed to have a solid fin.

The 3D style tail case pitch slider is plastic and has the single bellcrank. It's supposed to be on the left side.

absolutely true

however that problem turned out to be a manufacturing issue with the t/r shaft and was corrected. Later versions of the spectra were available with the open t/r box.

1. - when rebuilding the closed tail case, are the original gears the best (same size) or the speed up gears (one larger than the other)?

2. - And if using the speed up gears what configuration do the gears go in? 16 tooth on the input and 15 tooth on the tail shaft or visa versa?

3. - It had the speed up gears in it before I took it apart, but I cant remember which way they went. Does this help with tail wag or something? Why the change in gearing? I have a set of original matched gears and a set of speed up gears, just dont know which ones to install, or in what orientation........

two questions first:
  1. what size is the front pinion gear (there are two optional ratios)
  2. how fast do you plan on turning the rotor head?

I will have to count the teeth tomorrow, I don't know....

I turn 1850 head speed on occassion but usually 1750..... Dont know how to 3d, but fly loops, rolls, funnels, tic tocs, inverted etc. etc.

I do like aggressive sport flying "if you will"

the t/r speed up gears were really introduced to deal with t/r response for very low RPM hovering (1350-1450), typical of that for FAI type flying.

With the RPM ranges you are talking about dunno that its really gonna make much difference but it wouldn't be overspeeding the tail if you used them

I normally ran 1:1 gears in the tail and used the smaller (14 tooth) front pinion gear

if you have the smaller front pinion, and speed up gears in the back and you're running 1900 rpm and above you'd be really pushing the t/r

it should work fine with the 1:1 gears.

does anyone have a copy of the build photo for the enclosed tail gearbox? all I can find is the open version, and in my manual thats the one they show as well... however my used spectra came with a closed tail!!! just need a photo that shows all the parts and in what orientation they assemble....
